An Introduction to Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics. Second Edition

十一月 23, 2007

This textbook starts with an overview of important quantum behaviours and introduces the ideas of classical thermodynamics, exploring in general how they are applied to specific processes and interactions. The remainder of the book deals with statistical mechanics. Each topic ends with a boxed summary of ideas and results, and every chapter contains homework problems. Answers are given to odd-numbered problems, and solutions to even-numbered problems are available to instructors at the publisher's website.

Who is it for? Those on standard undergraduate courses in thermodynamics.

Changes since last edition: Rewritten to include more homework problems.

Presentation: This is a well-structured text that addresses the fundamentals of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics at an undergraduate level. It has a nice tutorial style, which is one of its main successes.

Would you recommend it? Yes.

David Cardwell is professor of superconducting engineering, department of engineering, Cambridge University.
