This week's competition, in which you have to identify a book from its opening sentence, is from a book whose title is taken from the Bible:

"Some of the evil of my tale may have been inherent in our circumstances. For years we lived anyhow with one another in the naked desert, under the indifferent heaven."

The winner receives a £20 book token and
the closing date is May 18.

Entries should be sent to

The THES
Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield

faxed to 0171-782 3300
or emailed to theschat@thes.co.uk

The winner of last week's competition, who correctly identified Jeanette Winterson's Sexing the Cherry , is David Martin of the University of Sheffield.
