Essential Animal Behavior

十一月 18, 2005

Animal behaviour is a complex subject that demands an integrated interdisciplinary approach.

Graham Scott says he sets out to provide a "concise and thorough introduction to animal behavior". He succeeds admirably while giving the requisite interdisciplinary integration. Scott presents a fascinating subject in an arresting manner, condensing his material but not sacrificing detail.

The book is readable and copiously illustrated, and draws on classical and current work in animal behaviour. Scott whets the appetite for further study. The text is designed for introductory and non-majors courses in animal behaviour and ethology for students in biological sciences and in psychology, but it will prove a useful revision guide and can be used as an update aid by teachers.

Chapter themes include nervous system control, the motivation and organisation of behaviour, communications, foraging, reproductive behaviour and avoiding predation. Text boxes provide case studies, and explain imprinting or circadian rhythms, all of which help the relevance and immediacy of this excellent book.

Richard D. Jurd is principal teaching fellow and senior tutor in biological sciences, Essex University.
