This role will focus on human-oriented technical information retrieval or natural language processing (NLP) research. Set within the Interaction, Technology and Information Discipline, and reflecting a strong human-computer interaction orientation, the successful candidate will also collaborate closely with the Data Science and AI Discipline. Their work will contribute to one or more of the School's overarching themes, including responsible computing and digital health. As the successful candidate you will have a track record of publishing in key outlets appropriate to their discipline-for example, SIGIR, TOIS and IP&M for information retrieval, or ACL, EMNLP and FAccT for NLP. At both levels, the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching and research efforts of the School. Furthermore, part of this role will include: delivering high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programs maintaining and advancing scholarly and professional capabilities, and contributing to curriculum development active engagement with academic, industry and professional communities, and collaboration with colleagues across teaching and research activities. For appointment at Level B (Lecturer), the focus will be on developing a strong research profile, contributing to teaching programs, and participating in collaborative research and engagement activities. The Lecturer may also undertake course coordination responsibilities. For appointment at Level C (Senior Lecturer), the role includes a significant contribution to program delivery and a strong emphasis on research leadership. You will be expected to lead high-quality research projects, build successful funding pipelines, and produce impactful research outputs. You will play a key role in embedding research within the School, developing strategic collaborations across the University and with external partners, and may also contribute to program management and leadership. About You To be successful for this position, you will have: Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels in core areas of Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence and/or Data Science, including online delivery, and the ability to produce high quality curriculum or program materials. (Level C: including coordination of large courses and implementation of innovative approaches to student-centred learning and quality improvement.) Research track record in human centric information retrieval or human centric NLP evidenced by publications, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links. (Level B: emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs. Level C: emerging nationally recognised track record including substantial record of research outputs in high quality outlets.) Alignment with one of the key priorities of the school (responsible computing or digital health) is an advantage. Demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates. This studentship is offered as part of the prestigious Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network “MaGnesium Alloys for effICient solId stAte cooliNg (MGICIAN)”, a pan-European programme focused on advanced thermoelectric materials, devices, and system-level integration. About MGICIAN MGICIAN brings together academic and industrial partners across Europe and trains 15 Doctoral Candidates in materials development, interface engineering, module fabrication, and system integration. As a doctoral candidate, you will benefit from an integrated training programme combining academic research, industrial exposure, and international mobility, alongside structured training in transferable and professional skills. Project description Based at the University of Southampton, this PhD project will focus on the development of advanced thermoelectric cooler designs for on-chip cooling applications within the MGICIAN Doctoral Network. The project will address model-based and data-driven design strategies to optimise thermoelectric cooler architectures using magnesium-based materials and modules developed in the consortium. Particular emphasis will be placed on improving cooling efficiency, thermal uniformity, dynamic response, and integration compatibility with modern microelectronic and photonic platforms. The project will combine numerical modelling, optimisation methodologies, and experimental validation to establish design–performance relationships and ensure scalability and application-oriented implementation of thermoelectric cooling solutions for next-generation compact electronic systems.
