Xavier University of Louisiana is the only US Catholic historically black university. It was initially founded as a high school in 1915 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. In 1925 the institution became a college.
The university is well known for its pre-med and pre-pharmacy programmes. Its courses include biological and public health sciences, business, education and counselling, pre-law, art, English, history, music, theology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, communication studies, psychology, sociology and speech pathology among others.
All undergraduate students must complete 60 hours of liberal arts core curriculum courses including English literature, fine arts, foreign languages, history, African-American studies, mathematics, natural sciences, philosophy, theology and social sciences.
Xavier’s students are 70 per cent African-American and over half of the students come from Louisiana. In 2015, the New York Times Magazine also credited the university as a top producer of African-American doctors.
Xavier is one of six universities in New Orleans. The city is famous for its Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras, as well as its NFL (Saints) and NBA (Pelicans) teams.
Xavier alumni include former US Secretary of Labour Alexis Herman, NBA basketball player Nathaniel Cifton, sculptor John T. Scott and jazz alto saxophonist and one of the first rhythm and blues artists Earl Bostic.

This role will focus on human-oriented technical information retrieval or natural language processing (NLP) research. Set within the Interaction, Technology and Information Discipline, and reflecting a strong human-computer interaction orientation, the successful candidate will also collaborate closely with the Data Science and AI Discipline. Their work will contribute to one or more of the School's overarching themes, including responsible computing and digital health. As the successful candidate you will have a track record of publishing in key outlets appropriate to their discipline-for example, SIGIR, TOIS and IP&M for information retrieval, or ACL, EMNLP and FAccT for NLP. At both levels, the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching and research efforts of the School. About You To be successful for this position, you will have: Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver programs at undergraduate and post-graduate levels in core areas of Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence and/or Data Science, including online delivery, and the ability to produce high quality curriculum or program materials. Research track record in human centric information retrieval or human centric NLP evidenced by publications, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links. You will develop a new model of electrical energy distribution, including renewable energy generation and electric vehicles. It will be used to optimize network resources across the grid, matched to energy supply and user demands. The project will include optimization and probabilistic analysis under practical engineering constraints.
