About William & Mary

Considered a “public Ivy” and one of the world’s great liberal arts universities, the College of William & Mary blends the personal experience of a liberal arts college with the reach of a research university. Founded by Royal Charter in 1693, it is the second oldest college and the first university in the US. W&M offers more than 40 undergraduate and more than 40 graduate programmes in arts and sciences, business, education, law and marine science, and its programmes regularly place near the top of college rankings. Today, enrolment stands at just under 8,000 full-time (graduate and undergraduate) students with a 12:1 student/faculty ratio, among the lowest of public universities.

Tobacco taxes and duties on furs and pelts initially underwrote this \"public Ivy\" (the colonies' second college, chartered in 1693). Here, presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler, along with 16 Declaration of Independence signatories, were schooled. Its Sir Christopher Wren-designed edifice is the US' oldest college building. On 1,200 acres, around 600 faculty instruct about 8,000 scholars.
