The project aims to uncover how animals with miniature brains can efficiently process multisensory stimuli. Using a powerful combination of techniques – high-resolution imaging, intracellular recordings and behavioural experiments – this project aims to uncover how beetles detect and respond to deep-red stimuli and infrared (heat) information. Results will provide new information about evolution and function of sensory systems and have the potential to unlock biological solutions for modern problems, including improved efficiency of sensors and image processing. The Research Officer will lead field expeditions to collect insects, primarily based in the mallee regions of Australia (particularly Western Australia) and forests in North America or Europe. They will have the opportunity to contribute to anatomical (e.g. electron microscopy), physiological (e.g., electrophysiology), and/or behavioural experiments (e.g. field studies, controlled laboratory studies). The Research Officer will join a world-class team and benefit from collaboration and training with leading scientists across multiple institutions, including Dr Patricia Jusuf (University of Melbourne), Prof Gregor Belušič (University of Ljubljana), and Prof Kentaro Arikawa (Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI), with planned research visits to these groups during the project. The role provides variety and flexibility. The successful candidate will be able to develop independent research directions, contribute to supervision of higher degree research students, analyse complex datasets, and lead the preparation of peer-reviewed publications. Skills and Experience To be considered for this position, you will have A completed or final stages of a PhD in sensory biology, neuroethology, physiology, entomology, behavioural ecology, or a closely related discipline. Demonstrated ability to design experiments, analyse biological data, and interpret results. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively, contributing to a positive and collegial research culture. Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to manage time, coordinate fieldwork, and meet research deadlines. About the Job: The College of Science, Mathematics and Technology is seeking highly motivated individuals to join the Department of Natural Sciences at WKU. All faculty positions are full-time assignments, effective at the start of the 2026 Spring or Fall semester. These positions are full-time assignments, appointed on a 3-year contract initially, and are renewable upon a successful review of reappointment. A Lecturer is a full-time employee who teaches 30 credits per year (10-month contract) or 39 credits per year (11-month contract) and provides student and learning support services during the assigned period. Lecturers normally teach up to 3 different courses, with each section typically consisting of 22-28 students. Lecturers will be expected to provide high-quality teaching, student advisement, and learning support services, as well as service to the university, college, school, program, and/or the professional community, and perform related work as required. About us: The post will be based in the KCL Social, Genetic, and Developmental Psychiatry Centre, within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). The Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP) Centre is uncovering the genetic and environmental influences on mental health and psychiatric disorders. Our research encompasses behavioural genetics, molecular genetics, experimental psychology and psychiatry, and neuroimaging. This project represents the largest multiomics programme for severe depression worldwide, designed to accelerate discovery in psychiatric genomics and to provide a long-term resource for the research community. This position provides an exciting opportunity to work in a cross-disciplinary environment, applying cutting-edge biobanking and genomic technologies to mental health research. The role will centre on the receipt, processing, and storage of thousands of blood samples, ensuring accurate sample tracking and data linkage within our ISO17025-accredited pipelines. The postholder will also support semi-automated sample processing, DNA extraction, and preparation of material for downstream genomic assays including Illumina genotyping and Oxford Nanopore sequencing. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team of laboratory scientists, bioinformaticians, and study coordinators, the postholder will ensure the highest quality of biobanking and data integrity. Responsibilities will include contributing to laboratory reports, maintaining detailed records, and supporting quality assurance processes.  This role offers the opportunity to contribute to flagship mental health genetics studies, helping to create a resource that will underpin psychiatric and population health research for years to come.
