B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) Limited until: 31.03.2030 Reference no.: 5313 How can we perform table-top experiments to obtain new insights into the foundations of quantum physics? Can we measure gravitational effects on entangled photons for shining light onto the interface of quantum physics and gravity? Can we exploit quantum photonics technology for novel quantum machine learning, quantum computing and quantum cybersecurity applications? Can we scale-up multiphoton platforms by using integrated optics, quantum-dot single-photon sources and customized two-dimensional nonlinear materials? Such questions are the driving force behind our research. You will be part of our team and develop new ideas, technologies and experiments. Your personal sphere of influence: As university assistant (PraeDoc) on this 4-year position, you will be part of the research group “Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation”, led by Univ.- Prof. Dr. Philip Walther. The group is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information group at the Faculty of Physics, and a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) – one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe – and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions. The main activities reach from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces. You will also benefit from being a fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), being part of a thriving community with more than 100 quantum scientists on the premises, about 300 quantum researchers in Vienna. The Walther Group unites an international team of scientists who are passionate about research in quantum optics, quantum information and quantum technologies. Our 35 researchers, from undergraduate student, PhD candidate to Postdoc are working together on mostly experimental topics in small subgroups. Teamwork is a key factor to our group’s success. Together we have assembled a unique skill set and knowledge base in quantum information, quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum foundations as well as quantum-gravity interface. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You are involved in a specific and well-funded research project dedicated to experimental quantum foundations and indefinite causal order. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months. This will be reviewed and adapted on an annual basis. You will contribute to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes) within the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. You will fill some administrative tasks, contributing to the success and self-organization of the group for research, teaching and administration. You will continuously stay informed about the state of the art in your field. You contribute to outreach by publications, conference presentations and public activities.   This is part of your personality: You have completed your Master's degree or Diploma in physics and written your thesis in the field of quantum optics. You have experience with quantum foundations, photonic platforms, non-linear processes and table-top experiments. You have experience in academic writing. You should have experience with the usual tools for advanced experiments: programming experience: Matlab, Python, LaTeX. You have excellent command of written and spoken English. Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs Job Requirements SNB-valid Full Practicing Certificate (Registered Nurse). A degree in Nursing from a recognised University. Possessing a Master’s degree, PhD degree and relevant certifications will be an added advantage. Have at least 10 years of clinical nursing experience in healthcare settings. Extensive experience and knowledge of nursing skills and industry practices to bring industry perspectives to SIT. Keen interest in innovation projects, with demonstrated ability in developing solutions to technical problems. Experience in research projects and publications will be an added advantage. Strong supervisory skills and enjoy working closely with students in an educational environment. Experience in simulation education will be an added advantage. Demonstrate proficiency to keep abreast of development in the field and pursue professional certification programs. Possessing industrial certifications in relevant areas will be an added advantage (e.g., simulation training) Possession of a good network of relationships with industry partners in hospitals, community, and ILTC sectors will be an added advantage.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Fellow / Engineer (Building-Grid Interaction Design) will contribute to a two-year applied research project funded by the BCA, focusing on the development of a power grid interactive building or cluster of buildings. The role involves designing and implementing monitoring, visualization and control system to coordinate multiple energy sources including battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, and diesel generators, and dynamically interacting with building management system to shed signficant loads under varying operating conditions. The research staff will develop, simulate, and test controller logic using MATLAB/Simulink or similar environments, analyse performance across diverse scenarios, and document results for technical reporting. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in modern facilities management, mechanical and electrical engineering and energy efficiency management.  Key Responsibilities Participate in the research project to design a microgrid controller for grid interactive building applications. Develop control algorithms for dynamic master selection, coordinating BESS, PV, diesel generators, and other sources. Implement predictive, rule-based, or optimisation-based control strategies using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or embedded software tools. Integrate controller logic with the microgrid model and validate performance under different simulated conditions. Conduct testing of control strategies under various operating conditions such as extreme weather, load variation, equipment failure and deployment constraints. Prepare documentation, flowcharts, control logic diagrams, and controller specifications for the final report. Assist with procurement of software licences and technical equipment. Conduct Risk Assessments and ensure compliance with WSH regulations. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Work independently and collaboratively to maintain research software and project tools. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by supervisor. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Strong programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, or similar environments. Understanding of control systems, power electronics, or energy management strategies. Experience in microgrid controller design is advantageous. Familiarity with BESS control strategies, SOC management, or optimisation algorithms preferred. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Ability to implement and test algorithmic logic using simulation tools. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills. Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
