University Rey Juan Carlos is a Spanish public research university located in Madrid. It has four campuses across the city in Móstoles, Alcorcón, Vicálvaro and Fuenlabrada. The institution is named after King Juan Carlos I of Spain and is a relatively new university having been established in 1996. The university offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees as well as nine programmes taught in English. There are also a number of university centres affiliated with the institution such as the Humanities Institute, the University Centre for Applied Social Studies and the Centre for Latin America Studies. The university belongs to the Spanish Network of Healthy Universities, a group of institutions in Spain committed to the promotion of a health university environment. The promotion of sustainability is also important on campus and there are a number of commitments towards energy efficiency, waste management and responsible consumption. There are more than 30,000 students at the university with approximately 11 per cent international students from 80 different nationalities. The university collaborates with a number of different associations and NGOs to present students with a range of volunteering opportunities during their study time. There are also volunteer programmes available in the university hospitals. There are three thriving theatre groups open to students of all abilities and each group produces one show a year. Students can also join the choir and the orchestra if they have a passion for music. Additionally, there are a number of sports teams that students can participate in, including basketball, handball, futsal, football, rugby and volleyball.
