The University of Pernambuco was established in 1965 and now has 15 teaching units and three large hospitals across the Recife and Metropolitan Region of Pernambuco, Brazil. The university offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses either face-to-face or through remote learning. Pernambuco is a state located in northeastern Brazil on the coast. Its capital city is Recife, which has a vibrant cultural scene, historical centre and coastal shores. Undergraduate face-to-face courses at the university are offered across four main departments: education, human, health, and technology. Degree subjects include computing, pedagogy, law, engineering, medicine, and letters. Most courses are offered in either Portuguese or English. There are four distance learning undergraduate courses: biological sciences, letters, pedagogy, and public administration. At the University of Pernambuco, postgraduate courses are offered to give graduates the professional skills to enhance Brazil’s social and economic development. There are five types of postgraduate courses on offer: specialisation, MBA, residencies, master's and doctorates.

Ref.: 534003 Work type: Full-time Department: School of Modern Languages and Cultures (05100) Categories: Teaching Staff Applications are invited for appointment as Lecturer in Spanish (Global and Area Studies) in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (Ref: 534003), to commence on February 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and availability of funding. Applicants should possess a relevant Master’s degree with demonstrated expertise in  teaching Spanish to non-native speakers, plus at least 5 years of experience in teaching courses at the tertiary level. Applicants with a relevant Ph.D. degree or nearing completion of a Ph.D. degree, the ability to teach research-based courses on subjects related to Hispanophone cultures and Spanish pedagogy, and with a proven track record of planning and executing co-curricular activities and experiential learning programmes will receive preferential consideration. Applicants must be native or near-native speakers of Spanish with excellent English proficiency. They should be conversant with current trends in Spanish language teaching and assessment, as well as with the application of AI and other cutting-edge technologies in language education. The appointee will be expected to teach a range of courses at different levels, develop new courses, and design assessment materials. While this is primarily an academic-related post with teaching and administration as the main duties, research activities will be encouraged. The Role and the Department The Arts and Humanities Faculty Global Opportunities Coordinator role is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a cross-departmental team providing support to the staff and students of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Our Professional Services teams place a strong emphasis on professional development and team members are encouraged and supported to identify and take forward process improvements, specific projects and other initiatives appropriate to their grade. In particular this role, with close supervision from the Deputy Faculty Manager, and via collaboration with the International Office's Global Opportunities team, involves ensuring the best possible experience for students preparing for and engaged on travel abroad as a constituent part of one of the Faculty's degree programmes, or participating on a Durham degree programme as an exchange student. This newly-established role is an excellent development opportunity for an individual with the confidence, resilience and dynamism to support academic colleagues in reinforcing the Faculty's commitment to internationalisation in education, as well as skills required to support students to take full advantage of the opportunities and challenges of residence abroad. On a day-to-day basis, this will include: Providing support, advice and guidance for students preparing for or embarked on their year abroad, and for those exchange students participating in Durham degree programmes With appropriate support, establishing and coordinating a faculty-wide Year Abroad student engagement programme. Coordinating the annual nominations and applications processes for partner Universities and external organisations (e.g. the British Council). As a Department Travel approver, and following appropriate training, assessing and approving students' insurance and risk assessment documentation, escalating higher-risk cases as appropriate. Regularly reviewing the Faculty's student-facing information and communications platforms, including the establishment and maintenance of appropriate social media channels, to ensure that they remain up to date and compliant. In collaboration with academic colleagues, coordinating the monitoring and recording of placement activity to ensure that students can travel abroad safely and in accordance with relevant policy and legislation. Establishing and maintaining excellent relationships with key University stakeholders responsible for year abroad provision, as well as external stakeholders in partner institutions. The UK Illicit Project is an NIHR funded 14-month pilot RCT of The Illicit Project-UK a school-based universal drug prevention and harm reduction intervention for older adolescents. The research follows on from an earlier feasibility study funded under the government's Innovation Fund to Reduce Demand for Illicit Substances.  It is a collaboration between Liverpool John Moores University, Stirling University, the Matilda Centre at the University of Sydney, the University of Liverpool, and Queens University, Belfast.
