Basic information and contact details for the University of Trieste

institution

The University of Trieste, founded in 1924, is just a baby compared to other higher education institutions across the world. It was only with the transition to Italian sovereignty, following the First World War, that Trieste began to develop its own institutions of higher learning and university.

Based in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy, with both mountainous and coastline areas, a multitude of activities are on offer. Trieste is nestled between a beautiful gulf, which hosts the largest sailing regatta in Europe.

Almost everything in Trieste is within walking distance and the city has reliable public transportation. Austria, Slovenia and Croatia are all within easy reach making it easy for students to travel to equally beautiful European regions.

The University of Trieste has its main facilities in Trieste, hosting most departments and centres, but also has campuses in the cities of Gorizia, Portogruaro and Pordenone.

The university underwent reform in 2010 with the implementation of the new Statute of the University which redesigned the institutional architecture of the university.

The university now offers a wide range of degree programmes at bachelor, master and doctoral level as well as short vocational masters, advanced masters and specialisation programmes, most of which are in the medical area.

The university offers exchange programmes with universities in the EU and collaborates with several universities from Eastern Europe and across the world. It also participates in various research projects at national and international level.

The campus boasts a library with some 15 branches, a language centre, conference centres, and accommodation and restaurants.

Notable alumni include, Darko Bratina, sociologist and Member of Parliament, mathematician, Alberto Conti, and Dušan Jelinčič, a journalist and novelist.
