The EIC-funded project’s objective is to enhance laser technology performance through creating functionalised REDS thin-disks as new optical components for innovative-lasers applications. We’re looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to be part of our team to advance our Rapid Pulsed Laser Deposition (RPLD) technology and ultimately develop a new class of active mirror to underpin the next generation of thin-disk lasers. What You’ll Do: innovate: develop scalable RPLD processes to fabricate REDS active mirrors collaborate: work with a dynamic team and engage in interdisciplinary research experiment: gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge physical-vapour-deposition fabrication techniques, lasers, and honing your practical skills explore: help develop a deeper understanding of how to produce a high-quality REDS crystals and scale to practical dimensions. We’re seeking a capable and resourceful postdoctoral candidate eager to dive into laboratory work to develop RPLD methods to create these novel optically active sapphire elements. The Department offers a full range of programmes leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Science and Bachelor of Science. The Department is looking for enthusiastic, established and suitably qualified person to join the Department to take part in a number of teaching and research activities. Duties The appointee will be required to: (a)    conduct lectures, tutorials and supervise students at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels in construction technology, engineering management and related areas. Some evening teaching is expected; (b)    prepare teaching materials including hand-outs, presentations, coursework assignments, examination papers, etc.;  (c)    meet with students during office or assigned hours on academic matters, career issues and other appropriate matters; (d)    assess students’ study progress by periodic evaluations through coursework assignments, tests and examinations according to established grading scheme / policy; (e)    propose / plan new programmes, design / review subject / programme curriculum, and design / facilitate learning activities; (f)     contribute to subject / programme validation and coordinate programme quality assurance processes; (g)    help promote teaching quality by leading / organising teaching development projects, and/or chairing / serving on teaching-related committees / panels, and by means of workshops / forums and by coaching / mentoring other junior teaching staff to become better teachers; (h)    engage actively in scholarly activities; (i)     perform administrative duties as and when called upon by the Head of Unit; (j)     render professional service to the community and support activities that promote or foster links with the profession in the industry and/or in the community, e.g. serving on committees of external bodies of the profession, etc.; and (k)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his/her delegates. Qualifications Applicants should have:  (a)    a relevant master’s degree in Construction or a closely related field, plus not less than three years of post-qualification tertiary teaching experience and/or relevant professional, practical or industrial experience;  (b)    strong competencies in design and delivery of teaching, curriculum and pedagogy development, and subject administration;  (c)    a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese; and (d)    good teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. The role The main purpose of the job is to undertake research and support the delivery of the OSMOSIS research programme as required. OSMOSIS is funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research. The aim of OSMOSIS is to co-produce resources and toolkits to improve the support available to family/informal carers for a relative affected by psychosis. The OSMOSIS programme comprises three work packages: (i) a service mapping exercise in three local boroughs across East London and East Sussex; (ii) a qualitative study using individual interviews with carers and focus groups with various staff to explore carers’ experiences of accessing social care support; and (iii) co-production and sharing of outputs with associated toolkits to improve and facilitate support for carers. The research programme is jointly led by researchers at the University of Surrey and City St George’s, with further co-investigators based in University of Kent and community organisations. There will be a second Post-Doctoral Research Fellow based at City St George’s, and the two Fellows will work closely for the duration of the research programme. Both postholders will work on all three of the programme’s work packages, taking the lead for their respective areas. Main duties will include establishing and strengthening collaboration with local community carer organisations, carer support workers, conducting desktop and site-based service mapping exercise, qualitative data collection and analysis, and working closely with the PPI Leads in co-producing outputs and associated toolkits to aid implementation. There will be opportunities to contribute to and lead academic papers and presentations at dissemination events. About you Applications are invited from candidates with qualitative and participatory/co-produced research expertise, and experience in conducting community engagement and service mapping. Applicants drawing on personal experiences of caring for a loved one living with mental health challenges in their work will be particularly welcome. The postholder will be based in a team with considerable expertise in providing support and mentoring for researchers working from a lived experience perspective. We welcome applications from people from racially minoritised communities. You will need to be motivated, efficient, have good communication skills, and excellent track record of completing deliverables on time. You will manage the day-to-day running of the work packages and work closely with the rest of the research team and the network of collaborators.
