Starting out as little more than a log cabin in 1787 and named the Pittsburgh Academy, the University of Pittsburgh is now a public research institution with around 25,000 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate students with campuses across the entire state.

It is made up of 16 schools and colleges, including the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, the Swanson School of Engineering and the School of Social Work.

The main Pittsburgh campus in the Oakland area of the city spans 132 acres of land and houses a large number of the university’s notable buildings, such as the Cathedral of Learning.

Built in 1926 and listed in the national register of historic places, the colossal 42-story cathedral is home to classrooms, libraries, computer labs, and a theatre. Standing at 535 feet, it is the second-tallest educational building in the world after Moscow State University’s main building.

The Pittsburgh campus also has 17 libraries, the largest being the Hillman Library, which contains around 1.5 million books spread over five floors, with a study capacity for 1,500 users. The entire university library system is the 22nd largest in the US.

The university’s schools of health sciences also benefit from a partnership with the leading non-profit Pittsburgh hospital, working collaboratively on such things as transplantation, oncology and psychiatry.

The University Honors College also has stewardship of the Allen L. Cook Spring Creek Preserve, which acts as a 6,000-acre research lab for students that has been likened to an archaeologist’s paradise, complete with dinosaur fossils, 9,000 years of Native American archaeology and a portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. 

The alumni network of the university numbers over 320,000 and includes Nobel laureates, Pulitzer prize-winners and Rhodes scholars. In 2003, Paul Lauterbur won the Nobel Prize in Physiology for his work on magnetic resonance imaging, an idea he scribbled on a napkin while at a local restaurant as a Pitt doctoral student.

Actor and dancer Gene Kelly was also an alumnus.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the smooth running of CARES-Well, a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) national research project that aims to improve the wellbeing of the UK healthcare workforce. The EIC-funded project’s objective is to enhance laser technology performance through creating functionalised REDS thin-disks as new optical components for innovative-lasers applications. We’re looking for an enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to be part of our team to advance our Rapid Pulsed Laser Deposition (RPLD) technology and ultimately develop a new class of active mirror to underpin the next generation of thin-disk lasers. What You’ll Do: innovate: develop scalable RPLD processes to fabricate REDS active mirrors collaborate: work with a dynamic team and engage in interdisciplinary research experiment: gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge physical-vapour-deposition fabrication techniques, lasers, and honing your practical skills explore: help develop a deeper understanding of how to produce a high-quality REDS crystals and scale to practical dimensions. We’re seeking a capable and resourceful postdoctoral candidate eager to dive into laboratory work to develop RPLD methods to create these novel optically active sapphire elements. The role The main purpose of the job is to undertake research and support the delivery of the OSMOSIS research programme as required. OSMOSIS is funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research. The aim of OSMOSIS is to co-produce resources and toolkits to improve the support available to family/informal carers for a relative affected by psychosis. The OSMOSIS programme comprises three work packages: (i) a service mapping exercise in three local boroughs across East London and East Sussex; (ii) a qualitative study using individual interviews with carers and focus groups with various staff to explore carers’ experiences of accessing social care support; and (iii) co-production and sharing of outputs with associated toolkits to improve and facilitate support for carers. The research programme is jointly led by researchers at the University of Surrey and City St George’s, with further co-investigators based in University of Kent and community organisations. There will be a second Post-Doctoral Research Fellow based at City St George’s, and the two Fellows will work closely for the duration of the research programme. Both postholders will work on all three of the programme’s work packages, taking the lead for their respective areas. Main duties will include establishing and strengthening collaboration with local community carer organisations, carer support workers, conducting desktop and site-based service mapping exercise, qualitative data collection and analysis, and working closely with the PPI Leads in co-producing outputs and associated toolkits to aid implementation. There will be opportunities to contribute to and lead academic papers and presentations at dissemination events. About you Applications are invited from candidates with qualitative and participatory/co-produced research expertise, and experience in conducting community engagement and service mapping. Applicants drawing on personal experiences of caring for a loved one living with mental health challenges in their work will be particularly welcome. The postholder will be based in a team with considerable expertise in providing support and mentoring for researchers working from a lived experience perspective. We welcome applications from people from racially minoritised communities. You will need to be motivated, efficient, have good communication skills, and excellent track record of completing deliverables on time. You will manage the day-to-day running of the work packages and work closely with the rest of the research team and the network of collaborators.
