The University of Notre Dame is located in the US state of Indiana. Founded in 1842 by Reverend Edward F. Sorin, a priest of the French missionary order known as the Congregation of the Holy Cross, it was established with the aim of being one of America’s great Catholic universities.

Priests of the Holy Cross governed the university until 1967, when it shifted into a two-tiered system of governance made up of both lay and religious trustees and fellows. While remaining true to its religious roots and traditions, it now claims to be “dedicated to religious belief no less than scientific fact” and stands for “values in a world of facts”. 

Today, the private, coeducational research institution offers 67 undergraduate studies degree programmes within four colleges. These are the College of Arts and Letters, College of Science, Mendoza College of Business, and the College of Engineering. In addition, it is home to the School of Architecture, the First Year of Studies, and the Graduate School, Notre Dame serves around 12,000 students in all.

Its Graduate School was established in 1918 and is made up of four divisions: Engineering, Humanities, Science, and Social Science. Comprising 30 departments and serving over 2,000 students, it offers 26 doctoral degree programmes, 11 masters’ degrees, and four professional masters’ degrees. Around 97 per cent of students in the Graduate School receive full-tuition scholarships.

The university campus is spread across 1,261 acres and houses 171 buildings at a value of roughly $3.3 billion. The university’s operating budget is more than $1.5 billion with an endowment valued at close to $10 billion. Its expenditure from outside sources and research awards exceeds £130 million. The majority of this is federal government funding, while the remainder comes from industrial, foundation and other sponsors.

In international terms, Notre Dame attracts over 1,100 students from nearly 90 countries worldwide. As well as this, within its various academic departments, it hosts more than 350 international scholars annually.

It is estimated that more than half of the university’s undergraduate students embark on a year abroad during their time there. Destinations for study include countries from Australia to Brazil, China to France, Israel to Uganda, and many more in between.

Adding to the university’s international status, is its network of six ‘Global Gateways’ for academic and cultural exchange, located in Beijing, Chicago, Dublin, Jerusalem, London and Rome.

Job Requirements Master’s degree in Materials Science (Cement and Concrete), Civil Engineering, or a related discipline. Demonstrated knowledge and competence in cementitious materials and concrete characterisation, especially for Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC³) and Carbonated Steel Slag Cement. Familiarity with cement chemistry and hydration mechanisms will be an advantage. Key Competencies Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing is seeking to recruit a Project Manager to support major research projects in generative AI, computer vision and LLM development. You will join an established research group within a highly rated research department, with an excellent computing and software infrastructure for first class research, modern facilities and close links with industry. Surrey’s Institute for People-Centred AI builds on 40 years of work into foundational AI at the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) which is ranked 1st in the UK for Computer Vision and in the top-5 for both Audio-Visual AI and Robotics (CS Rankings, Sept 2024). The post sits within Professor Bowden’s sign language research group at CVSSP, which leads a portfolio of major collaborative projects developing AI for sign languages. These include SignGPT, a five-year EPSRC Programme Grant with the University of Oxford (Prof Zisserman) and UCL (Profs Cormier and Woll) building tools to translate automatically between spoken language and photo-realistic sign language video in both directions; UMCS, a UK and Japan collaboration developing real-time sign language translation in everyday conversation; and a Google.org-funded project reducing the cost of sign language translation through AI. We are seeking an experienced project manager to act as a single point of contact across this portfolio, ensuring that the operational aspects of these multi-partner, multi-million-pound projects run smoothly.  The applicant should have project management experience, and ideally a professional project management qualification. The post is funded through SignGPT and is offered for 2 years (in the first instance) at 0.5 FTE. However, there is scope for a larger FTE and/or a longer-term contract where appropriate, given the breadth of the group’s activities. The work will involve Deaf people and users of British Sign Language (BSL), and through wider collaborative links, users of other international sign languages. Knowledge of sign language and awareness of Deaf culture would be advantageous, as would a working knowledge of BSL. Deaf candidates with suitable project management experience would be welcome to apply. We will be recruiting a research engineers or fellows, as part of a wider project, to conduct research on: Signal processing combined with AI-based modification on speech signals. The need is for a real-time system, so efficient coding is important. Key Responsibilities: Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) Ian McLoughlin, Co-PI Tong Rong and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.  Undertake research within your domain, including keeping track of state-of-the-art work.
