The University of Murcia (UM) is a one-hundred-year-old institution that can trace its origins back to the thirteenth century. It is an international institution and a reference center for higher education in the Region of Murcia. The UM strives for academic excellence and plays a key role in research, teaching and innovation and is also a pioneer in e-government, with its clearly defined digital university strategy.

The UM is a public and comprehensive university that offers 54 undergraduate, 70 master and 35 doctoral programs in the fields of Arts and Humanities, Engineering, Health Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences and Law. The Faculties enjoy international recognition and boast important quality certifications. It promotes research and innovation in all areas of knowledge and works closely with national and international businesses and companies. There are 347 research groups and 4 research institutes and centers involved in a wealth of research activities (7000 articles have been published in indexed journals in the last five years according to Thomson Reuters WOS). Biomedical research is carried out at the three UM-affiliated hospitals and at the Biomedical Research Institute (IMIB), with 414 ongoing clinical trials. The Institute has been accredited by the Carlos III Health Institute.

The UM has a very diverse student body, with more than 50 nationalities represented on the campuses, thanks to the ERASMUS Program and to specific agreements with universities from Latin America, North America, Africa and Asia.

Students have the opportunity both to pursue intellectual development and to acquire professional skills. Several Libraries with “historical archives”, Sports facilities and Cultural activities are also available, while the Language Center offers courses in 10 different languages, including Spanish.

 

The UM is also involved in the 2030 Agenda with a special program named 17ODSesiones. Under this, every school will promote monthly one Sustainable Development Goal to raise awareness of the various goals within the university community and the rest of the region.

About the Chemical & Biochemical Sciences Green Process Engineering (CBS) The Chemical & Biochemical Sciences Green Process Engineering Department (CBS) is a component of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). The main objective of CBS is to set up a distinctive research-teaching program, of international level, to meet the research and teaching challenges of UM6P, in particular on green and environmental chemistry applied to all aspects of chemical sciences: organic and inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical biology, biochemical and thermal reactions. Research at CBS is organized around several major areas, which aim to answer challenging industrial questions, from complex chemical and biochemical reactions to scale-up and validation of process engineering. CBS projects aim at an in-depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms of all transformations in order to propose new original alternatives in terms of efficiency, environmental friendliness and sustainability. Job Description We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified post-doctoral researcher in organic/inorganic chemistry to join our research team for an exciting project focused on the development of novel synthetic methods for the production of phosphorus derivatives. These derivatives play a crucial role in various industrial applications, including fine chemistry, catalysis, agriculture, and life science. For instance, phosphorus-based chemicals are essential in hydrometallurgy, ceramics, and serve as building blocks for RNA and DNA. Additionally, their synthetic analogues are critical clinical drugs for treating a wide range of diseases, including hepatitis C virus and Covid-19. Expertise in coordination chemistry and/or process developement would be a plus for this position. Responsibilities: As a Post-Doctoral Researcher, your responsibilities will include: Green Synthetic Methods: Conducting research to establish innovative and environmentally friendly synthetic methodologies for accessing a diverse range of phosphorus derivatives. This will involve the creation of phosphorus–carbon bonds using techniques such as photochemical reactions, mechanochemistry, multi-component reactions, atoms and steps economy, and both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Experimental Validation: Designing and performing experiments at both laboratory and pilot scales to validate the feasibility and scalability of the developed synthetic processes for potential industrial applications. Organometallic and Phosphorus Chemistry: Applying your expertise in organometallic and phosphorus chemistry to design and develop synthetic methodologies, analyze chemical structures, and characterize synthesized compounds. Sustainability: Ensuring that all research activities align with green and sustainable principles, with a focus on reducing the environmental impact associated with phosphorus derivative synthesis. Publication and Reporting: Collaborating with the research team to write scientific reports, prepare research publications, and effectively communicate results and data analysis in both French and English. Candidate Criteria Ph.D. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a related field, accompanied by a distinguished record of research accomplishments. Demonstrated research experience in the area of green chemistry and organic phosphorus derivatives is essential. This may include published papers, conference presentations, or a strong thesis on the topic. Proficiency in organic synthesis techniques and methodologies is crucial, as you'll likely be working on designing and synthesizing novel phosphorus-containing compounds. Proficiency in various analytical techniques such as NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, IR spectroscopy, and HPLC, which are commonly used to characterize organic compounds.  Proven excellence in teaching and mentorship, evidenced by innovative pedagogical approaches and contributions to student development. Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a commitment to interdisciplinary research and innovation. The selected candidate will have a vital role in an innovative project that aims to map the resistome and clarify the mechanisms of multidrug resistance across diverse microbiomes—comprising clinical, environmental, and host-associated microbial communities. This project seeks to comprehend how antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) disseminate within microbial populations via horizontal gene transfer (HGT) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and how these processes affect human health, particularly regarding colorectal cancer (CRC). Key Responsibilities: Perform shotgun metagenomics and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) on microbial samples from various environments (clinical, environmental, tumor-associated microbiomes). Develop and implement bioinformatics pipelines for resistome, mobilome, and virulome profiling using tools such as MEGARes, CARD, VFDB, and PlasmidFinder. Investigate horizontal gene transfer (HGT) dynamics and plasmid-mediated dissemination of ARGs across microbial communities. Conduct phylogenetic and comparative genomic analyses to uncover the evolution of multidrug resistance in pathogenic bacteria. Analyze co-occurrence networks between resistance genes, virulence factors, and mobile elements in microbiome datasets. Collaborate with clinical partners and microbiome researchers to integrate multi-omics data for comprehensive resistome analysis. Publish high-quality research articles and present findings at international conferences. Contribute to grant writing and development of new research proposals. Required Qualifications: PhD in Microbial Genomics, Bioinformatics, Molecular Microbiology, Infectious Disease Biology, or a related field. Proven experience with high-throughput sequencing technologies (Illumina, Nanopore) and metagenomic analyses.
