This is a fixed-term position providing maternity leave cover. Your personal sphere of play: Situated at the Universitäszentrum Althanstraße (UZA II), you will operate at the intersection of pharmaceutical sciences, nutritional sciences and biology. As a Senior Scientist in our Facility for small-molecule mass spectrometry, you are the primary piont of contact for research groups seeking to integrate high-end MS analysis into their projects. You manage a diverse portfolio of a application in both targeted and non-targeted workflows, with particular emphasis on the characterization of multi-compound mixtures, specifically those plant, microbial, fungal and marine origin, as well as the analysis of large-scale human studies. Further applications include purity analysis, accurate quantification of compounds in biological samples, determining the accurate mass of synthesis products and metabolites, and structure elucidation. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You will work in a laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instrumentation (including low and high-resolution MS) located at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. You will organize analytical workflows, perform analytical measurements and analyze complex MS data to deliver high-quality results for research projects, project proposals and publications. You will interact with various research groups to discuss their questions and implement dedicated MS strategies. You will monitor the performance of MS instruments, perform routine maintenance and coordinate technical repairs. You will follow relevant literature and new analytical developments, and exchange expertise with other MS facilities (e.g. for proteomics) to enhance faculty-wide research capabilities. Hands-on experience with mass spectrometry systems (GC- or LC-MS, LC-MS preferred) for small-molecule analysis (low- or high-resolution MS). Technical knowledge for MS instrumentation and practical experience with routine maintenance of LC and/or MS systems. Experience with method development for sample preparation, chromatographic separation techniques (liquid- or gas chromatography), and MS. Detailed knowledge of the analytical process and critical aspects for analytical quality in small-molecule analysis. Experience with one or more MS data analysis software packages (e.g. mzmine, xcms, msDial, vendor packages) and common data analysis workflows in life science application and/or system biology (feature finding ion annatation, basic statistical analysis). Data management- and basic programming skills are highly desirable. Experience with data visualization and biological interpredation of small-molecule MS data (e.g. metabolomics data sets) is highly desirable, e.g. molecular networking and/or chemometric approaches. The project supports Singapore’s commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction. As a country with limited natural resources, Singapore is investing in innovative carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization technologies to reduce emissions and enhance energy security. This research aims to develop an integrated process for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals using renewable energy. The approach combines biotechnological and electrocatalytic processes to efficiently transform CO2 into useful chemicals, providing a novel and sustainable pathway for chemical manufacturing. The project is led by Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), with research strengths in metabolic engineering, microbial biomanufacturing, and sustainable process development. One Research Fellow will be hired to support the microbial engineering and bioprocess development aspects of the project: The Research Fellow will work under Dr. Zhou Kang at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). This role focuses on producing platform aromatics from C2 building blocks using engineered microbial strains, pathway engineering, and fermentation strategies. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in advancing the project towards a lab-scale demonstration of an integrated CO2-to-chemicals process. Key Responsibilities Conduct independent laboratory research related to microbial fermentation, strain engineering, and biotransformation. Develop and optimize microbial strains, biosynthetic pathways, and cultivation strategies to improve efficiency and product yield. Design and support the integration of biotechnological processes into a continuous lab-scale system. Characterize and analyze chemical and biological products using advanced analytical techniques. Collaborate closely with project team members and external collaborators across metabolic engineering, biocatalysis, and related disciplines. Document research findings, prepare technical reports, contribute to scientific publications, and help supervise junior researchers or students when needed. Qualifications & Experience PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, or a related field. Demonstrated research experience in one or more of the following areas: microbial fermentation, metabolic engineering, biotransformations, or bioprocess development. Hands-on experience with genetic engineering, molecular biology techniques, and strain construction is highly desirable. Strong problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively to collaborative projects. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. A strong publication record or clear evidence of research productivity will be an advantage. Our lab uses Python, MATLAB and C++ to automate both data analysis and process control. Knowledge in these tools as well as emerging agentic AI will also be an advantage.
