The University of Kelaniya has a history that dates back to 1875 when a centre of learning for Buddhist monks was created. In 1959 the centre became the Vidyalankara University and in 1978 it was renamed the University of Kalaniya.
As its name suggests, the university is located in Kelaniya, a city in the Western Province, Sri Lanka.
There are seven faculties within the university: faculty of science, faculty of medicine, faculty of social science, faculty of humanities, faculty of commerce and management, faculty of computing and technology, and the faculty of graduate studies. Each faculty is divided into a number of departments, which offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programmes.
The University of Kelaniya is committed to developing research in the areas of commerce, management, humanities, medicine, science and social sciences. Research is published in several journals including the Journal of Business and Technology, the Journal of International Studies and the Journal of Social Statistics.
The university is home to a number of centres that facilitate academic and scientific research throughout the year. These include the Centre for Gender Studies and the Centre for Sustainable Solutions.
