About the University of Ioannina

Basic information and contact details for the University of Ioannina

A Greek university located six kilometres south of the city of the same name, the University of Ioannina was founded in 1964 as part of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, becoming a university in its own right in 1970.

Ioannina is one of Greece’s largest universities, and students here can enjoy the sunny Mediterranean climate of the area.

The city itself can be traced back to the sixth century when it was founded by the emperor Justinian, and flourished after wealthy nobles fled to it following the sacking of Constantinople in 1261. Located in northwestern Greece, the Ioannina is a one-hour drive from a coastline facing the popular holiday islands of Corfu. 

Ioannina’s campus sprawls an incredible 170,000 m². Within this campus is expansive student accommodation, research centres and laboratories. As well as its state of the art facilities, the Monastery of Dourouti is located on the university grounds, a building which dates to the 18th-century and has been redeveloped as a guest house for visiting lecturers. 

Highly rated at Ioannina are the the School of Sciences and the School of Philosophy. There is also a focus on teacher training, with undergraduate courses offered in primary and pre-school education. In the city of Agrino in southern Greece the university also has an established department in Cultural Heritage Management and New Technologies. 

International students can apply to study at Ioannina through the Ministry of National Education in Greece. Ioannina also has exchange programmes with over a hundred universities in Europe through the Erasmus schemes, including University College London and the University of Hamburg.

FIMM is currently seeking a new member to the FinnGen research project’s admin team with the position of Project Manager FinnGen is a public-private research project that aims to better understand disease mechanisms by studying the genome and health data of 500,000 Finns. FinnGen's Partners include Finnish biobanks, Biobank Cooperative FINBB, university hospital districts, universities, Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), Finnish Red Cross Blood Service, Business Finland and 15 international pharmaceutical companies. The Project Manager works in the FinnGen admin team and as a close working partner of FinnGen's Scientific Director, Professor Aarno Palotie. In addition to FinnGen-related responsibilities, the role may also involve supporting other research projects and strategic initiatives within FIMM. The responsibilities of the Project Manager include financial and administrative tasks, such as preparing budgets, monitoring project-related budgets and expenses, and presenting financial information to the project’s Steering Committee. The role also involves overseeing project-related procurement and contract preparation in collaboration with the University of Helsinki administrative and legal teams, managing and coordinating the administrative team, negotiating with existing and potential new partners, and participating in contract negotiations. In addition, the Project Manager may be required to give research-related presentations at national and international scientific meetings. The position requires understanding of finance and economic incentives, including, taxation rules and experience working with both government funding and private-sector funding, is considered a strong advantage. Advanced experience with SAP and Excel is considered beneficial. The position requires demonstrated project management experience, sufficient understanding of biomedical research, and a general knowledge of the regulatory environment within the life sciences industry. Essential qualifications also include relevant higher university education and strong written and oral communication skills in English. Finnish language skills are not mandatory but are considered beneficial.
