Located in central Cologne, not far from the River Rhine, the University of Cologne (UoC) was founded in 1388, making it one of Germany’s, and Europe’s, oldest universities, where it was a leader in theological study.

Although UoC closed in 1798 under French rule, it re-opened again in 1919 as an institution that was independent of its past. The modern-day university seeks to combine the historical institution it once was with the present-day, reflecting a pride in its heritage and traditions while conveying a modern outlook – a factor that UoC says provides students with a unique learning environment.

Today, the university is one of the largest research universities in Germany, home to over 45,000 students and comprising six faculties. Almost a third of its students go on to enter the teaching profession, making it one of the foremost institutions for teacher training.

It recently launched a project encouraging ambitious secondary school students to attend and participate in lectures at the university, with the concept being so successful as to be adopted by several other institutions.

UoC established a Professional Centre in 2008 to offer students career advice, as well as opportunities to train in certain areas of expertise. The institution also prides itself on its investment in gender equality and diversity, with various methods in place to promote equality across the board.

Alumni of the university include a German Federal President, a Federal Chancellor, several European Court judges and four Nobel Prize recipients, the physicist Peter Grünberg among them.

With partnerships in place with universities that include the Paris-Sorbonne, University College London, Maastricht University and the Warsaw School of Economics, UoC students are able to pursue joint degree programmes with other renowned institutions across Europe.

This is an open-discipline call. We are seeking outstanding Humanities scholars capable of developing a creative and innovative programme of research and teaching bridging existing disciplinary strengths in HKUArts and artificial intelligence applications. The appointee will have their tenure home in their specific (inter)disciplinary unit in the Faculty of Arts, but will be jointly appointed to the School of Computing and Data Science and will also become a member of the Institute of Data Science (IDS). As an AI+Arts hire the appointee will foster cross-disciplinary collaborations between strategic research areas in the Faculty and, with the support of the Arts Technology Lab and its staff, take a leading role in applying artificial intelligence (AI) to their research and teaching in the Arts and Humanities. They will develop and maintain high-calibre research, publish their research findings with reputable journals and/or presses, and present their research at conferences, secure external funding through applications for grants, teach courses, mentor students, contribute to service and engage in the scholarly activities of the Faculty. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop/produce/investigate a web-based Ship Simulation and Optimisation Software Platform. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: i. Develop naval architecure calculation and ship design tools based on analytical or empirical methods, i.e., stability calculation, resistance and propulsion estimation, weight estimation, etc. ii. Develop a practical parametric model framework for ship and system design. iii. Carry out naval architecture calculations, i.e., stability, resistance, hydrodynamic analysis, etc. iv. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements Have relevant competence in the areas of naval architecture and ship hydrodynamics. Have a degree in Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering / Ocean Engineering / Other Relevant Engineering Degree. Possessing a Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous. Experience in any programming language will be advantageous. Experience in marine hydrodynamics will be advantageous.
