Located in central Cologne, not far from the River Rhine, the University of Cologne (UoC) was founded in 1388, making it one of Germany’s, and Europe’s, oldest universities, where it was a leader in theological study.

Although UoC closed in 1798 under French rule, it re-opened again in 1919 as an institution that was independent of its past. The modern-day university seeks to combine the historical institution it once was with the present-day, reflecting a pride in its heritage and traditions while conveying a modern outlook – a factor that UoC says provides students with a unique learning environment.

Today, the university is one of the largest research universities in Germany, home to over 45,000 students and comprising six faculties. Almost a third of its students go on to enter the teaching profession, making it one of the foremost institutions for teacher training.

It recently launched a project encouraging ambitious secondary school students to attend and participate in lectures at the university, with the concept being so successful as to be adopted by several other institutions.

UoC established a Professional Centre in 2008 to offer students career advice, as well as opportunities to train in certain areas of expertise. The institution also prides itself on its investment in gender equality and diversity, with various methods in place to promote equality across the board.

Alumni of the university include a German Federal President, a Federal Chancellor, several European Court judges and four Nobel Prize recipients, the physicist Peter Grünberg among them.

With partnerships in place with universities that include the Paris-Sorbonne, University College London, Maastricht University and the Warsaw School of Economics, UoC students are able to pursue joint degree programmes with other renowned institutions across Europe.

Prof. Alain Chong and Prof. Ying Weng are seeking an outstanding Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the newly established Postdoctoral Research Station in Business Administration at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, contributing to the development of the university’s research agenda. Your Responsibility Your key responsibilities include: Design and Develop Research: Formulate clear research objectives and contribute to the development of proposals for individual and collaborative projects, applying established and emerging methodologies to advance the research agenda. Conduct and Analyze Research: Collect, manage, and rigorously analyze complex datasets; interpret results; critically evaluate existing literature; and generate original insights that align with project goals. Disseminate Findings: Prepare high-quality manuscripts for submission to leading journals, present research at national and international conferences, and contribute to the visibility and impact of the research team. Secure Funding: Identify opportunities and contribute to the preparation of competitive grant applications to national and international funding bodies. Build Networks and Collaborations: Engage with internal colleagues and external partners (academic and industry) to exchange ideas, explore opportunities for collaboration, and establish partnerships that strengthen research outcomes. About You Qualifications: PhD awarded within 3 years in business administration, computer science, information systems, data science, or a related discipline. Programming & Data Skills: Strong proficiency in Python (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow); additional experience with R, MATLAB, or Julia is an advantage. Machine Learning Expertise: Familiarity with causal machine learning, ensemble methods, and deep learning architectures (CNNs, RNNs). Experience with explainable AI (e.g., SHAP, LIME) is preferred. Quantitative Analysis: Demonstrated ability to handle multimodal datasets, conduct statistical analysis, and apply predictive modeling and validation techniques. Research & Publication: Skilled at critically reviewing literature, designing rigorous studies, and producing publications for high-impact journals. Collaboration & Communication: Excellent oral and written English communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly. Knowledge of Chinese is a plus. Ability to work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams. Practical Experience: Prior hands-on research in AI applications / digital innovations in water ecological environment will be an asset. About the Project. This project focuses on research in Explainable Artificial Intelligence and Causal Machine Learning, applied to the intelligent monitoring and early warning of key water ecological environment indices, including prediction and management tasks. A network of reservoirs forms the backbone of the region’s water resource infrastructure, playing an essential role in ensuring urban water supply, mitigating flood risks, and supporting agricultural irrigation. However, the intricate interactions between natural hydrological cycles — such as precipitation and evaporation — and human operational controls, including release scheduling and storage regulation, introduce substantial complexity. This dynamic interplay makes the multi-reservoir system both ideal and challenging for developing advanced spatiotemporal forecasting models. By integrating causal inference with interpretable AI techniques, the project aims not only to improve prediction accuracy but also to uncover underlying cause-effect relationships, thereby enabling transparent, reliable early warnings for sustainable water resources development. USAIS is renowned for providing a regional service for severely and profoundly deaf children, young people and adults across the south of England and the Channel Islands. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to life-changing care for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, supporting them through assessment, implantation, and rehabilitation and beyond. The work includes specialist psychological assessment, formulation and therapy and there are opportunities for individual work, group work, and work with the wider system. Consultation and advice on patient’s psychological care to the wider multi-disciplinary team, as well as liaison with external agencies is an important aspect of the work. You will be a valued and key member of the multi-disciplinary team and have opportunities to shape the Clinical Psychology Service at USAIS. There are opportunities to teach on courses run at the University and with partner charities and organisations, as well as be involved in audit and service development within USAIS. You will also have a key role in the USAIS safeguarding team which provides consultation and support to the wider team. Attendances at conferences and training courses is encouraged and supported for continuing professional development.
