Founded in 1290, the University of Coimbra (UC) is one of the oldest universities in the world and the oldest in all of Portugal. Up until the early part of the 20th century, it was also the only Portuguese-speaking university in the world. Built in the grounds of a former palace, its 16th century campus is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Located in the historic city of Coimbra, the university is home to over 21,000 students, 10% of whom are international students, placing it among Portugal’s most international universities and lending the city a cosmopolitan feel.

UC is organised across three campuses and comprises eight faculties that offer a large and diverse academic portfolio. The university is particularly popular with technology and science students and the university is home to the largest science faculty in the country.

In keeping with its 700 year history, the university emphasises tradition alongside modernity and innovation.

Key features on campus include a theatre, sports facilities and stadiums, a publishing house, an astronomical observatory, a baroque library and an 18th century bell tower. The university also oversees a number of museums, including a science museum and a museum of sacred art.

The university lays claim to a number of unique traditions such as Queima das Fitas (Ribbon Burning), to celebrate the end of studies, and the tying of tin cans to the legs of new students to welcome them to the university.

Coimbra is regarded as a safe and friendly city to live in. Dating back to the Roman era, it is the fourth largest city in the country, situated on a riverfront, where medieval architecture sits alongside modern buildings.

Research Fellow in Geophysics

We seek a Research Fellow with a proven publication record to apply novel approaches to integration of seismic velocity and resistivity models derived from a recently acquired coincident wide-angle seismic, controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) and magnetotelluric (MT) dataset. We are particularly looking for someone with skills in the application of rock physics models to seismic and/or resistivity data but will also consider applicants with experience more focused in relevant geophysical data analysis. The Research Fellow will join an international team in the project “Quantifying evolution of magmatism and serpentinization during the onset of seafloor spreading”, funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council and the US National Science Foundation. The overall aim of this project is to quantify the evolution of serpentinisation and magmatism at a magma-poor rifted margin as seafloor spreading is initiated. Serpentinised mantle rocks are generally more conductive, often by about an order of magnitude, than mafic crustal rocks, so CSEM and MT techniques provide a promising route to resolve controversies around lithospheric structure. In August-September 2023, we conducted the first joint CSEM, MT and seismic experiment in the continent-ocean transition at a rifted margin, to determine how competing processes of magmatism and serpentinisation evolve during the initiation of seafloor spreading. We focused our work at the sediment-starved Goban Spur rifted margin southwest of the UK, which is uniquely suited to such a study because of its thin sediment cover, narrow continent-ocean transition and existing covering with deep seismic reflection data. The position is based in the School of Ocean and Earth Science, which is located at the University of Southampton’s Waterfront Campus at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. The research fellow will collaborate with project partners at the National Oceanography Centre, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of Bremen.  Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof. Tim Minshull (tmin@soton.ac.uk). The School of Psychology, University of Southampton, is seeking to appoint three permanent lecturers in health, clinical or social psychology to grow our research and contribute to delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate education. We are seeking applications from individuals whose expertise will help us build capacity as part of an ongoing programme of strategically focussed investment, aligned with our four research centres (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/research/areas/psychology). We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose research can contribute to one or more of our cross-centre thematic priorities in adult and child mental health (e.g., mood/anxiety disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions, psychosis), digital interventions and health technologies, and individual, relational, and collective self (e.g., personality and wellbeing, relationship processes and sexual behaviour, culture and intergroup relations). You will hold a doctorate in psychology or relevant discipline, be able to evidence excellence in research and teaching in the areas highlighted above commensurate with your level, and share our ambition to deliver high quality research, education, and training in psychological science. Successful applicants will benefit from working in a vibrant, world-leading, research intensive Russell Group university. The Role and the Department Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides guidance, expert advice and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related work, including securing funding, working with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice and supporting professional development. We are seeking a Post Award Finance and Project Officer to join our Post Award Team within Research Operations to support a colleagues maternity leave. You will deliver comprehensive post-award financial and administrative support, ensuring that project leaders and researchers receive timely, expert advice. Your responsibilities will span the full grant lifecycle, from award acceptance and project setup, through financial monitoring and budget management, to final claims, reconciliation, project closure, and preparation for both internal and external audits. Stakeholder engagement is at the core of this role. You will act as the primary point of contact for internal and external partners, facilitating clear communication and effective coordination across departments and funding bodies. You will also regularly review project budgets, income, and expenditure to maintain accuracy and to identify and address any significant variances such as under- or overspending, ineligible costs, or issues with overhead recovery. The postholder has the following key responsibilities: Manage the post-award financial administration of non-research grants, ensuring accurate and timely closure.   Prepare and submit financial claims, invoices, and statements in line with funder and institutional deadlines.   Monitor budgets, income, and expenditure, identifying and resolving variances, and providing financial forecasts to project leads.   Reconcile project accounts, process final expenditure and exchange rate journals, and ensure accurate allocation of income.   Ensure compliance with funder terms and conditions, advising stakeholders on eligible expenditure and removing ineligible costs.   Coordinate staff approvals with HR, ensuring alignment with project budgets and funder requirements.   Calculate and transfer fEC overheads/indirect costs in accordance with approved budgets.   Liaise with internal teams (Finance, HR, Departments) and external stakeholders (funders, HEIs, partners) to resolve queries.   Maintain accurate, auditable records and ensure financial systems reflect final approved expenditure.   Working pattern: Monday - Friday.
