About The Role

The Philosophy Department at King’s College London is seeking an outstanding philosopher with research expertise and teaching experience in Ethics.

 

The successful candidate will lead or direct their own original and independent programme of research at an international standard. This is a full time, fixed term post (18 months).

 

The Department of Philosophy is one of the largest and most distinguished in the UK. We have particular  research strengths in the history of philosophy, philosophy of mind and psychology, philosophy of language and linguistics, metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of science and ethics and political philosophy.

 

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria


	A PhD in Philosophy or relevant related area awarded, defended, or submitted by time of appointment
	Outstanding research achievement and potential, relative to career stage, for leading their own programme of research in any of the listed areas.
	Relevant teaching competence and experience and outstanding ability to engage, teach, supervise and support undergraduate and postgraduate students. Experience of module design and management.
	Understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion issues; how they may impact on academic content and issues relating to student need.
	The ability and willingness to manage administrative tasks as needed for the running of the Department, the Faculty and the College. Evidence of willingness to take on leadership roles with respect to the administration of the Department, Faculty, and College.


 

Desirable criteria

 


	Research and/or teaching expertise or competence in other areas that will help widen or consolidate our curriculum.
	Research that has non-academic impact and wider benefits beyond academia

King’s History department is an internationally-recognised centre for the study of the history of the world. Our undergraduate curriculum introduces students to world history from the early medieval period to the present; it then offers students pathways to study every continent through their second and third years. Our MA provision is similarly broad, developing students’ expertise in medieval, early modern and modern world history. We are an intellectual home for scholars of every region of the world, who use approaches which range from local micro-histories to large-scale quantitative analysis. About The Role

The Department of History seeks to appoint a Lecturer specialising in the History of Science and the Environment, 1800-2000, for one year beginning January 2025. This is to cover a colleague who has been awarded a major research grant. We are looking to recruit a colleague with expertise in any aspect of the field able to teach a range of courses in the history of science and environmental history, and their methods.

You will conduct and publish high quality research in the subject. You will teach a range of undergraduate and, potentially, MA modules in the history of modern science and environmental history.

You will contribute to survey modules, taking seminars of core skills modules and possibly MA teaching. You will assume pastoral and administrative responsibilities, and participate actively in the life and culture of the department. You will participate in and help lead collaborative research activities at King’s, especially in the history department and Environmental Humanities Network. A strong research record, excellent teaching ability, outstanding interpersonal skills and a collaborative ethos are essential for the role.

This is a full time and you will be offered a a fixed term contract until 31 December 2025.

The appointees will report to the Chairman of the Teaching and Learning Committee. The role

	Proactively identify students at risk of leaving the University through the use of existing engagement and assessment data, through the generation of new data, referrals from personal tutors, the senior personal tutor and those resitting or returning to study.  
	Intervene on a 1:1 basis to support good student outcomes. Initiate and maintain contact with students, using a range of communications channels and build a trusted relationship with individuals.
	Arrange regular sessions, providing students with a confidential space to discuss challenges and oversee ongoing bespoke pastoral and academic study skills and assessment support.
	Explore and actively enable students to engage with a range of additional sources of University support or advice, as appropriate to the individual case, liaising with academic colleagues with the school and other professional services staff to ensure effective referral and advice for students.
	Maintain regular, ongoing 1:1 support sessions to monitor progress, support the student in developing agency and ensure regular communications occur with students to maintain a sense of belonging to their programmes and to the wide University community.

Description

The Robot Learning & Control laboratory in the Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a postdoctoral associate with a strong expertise in learning-based control for robotics, with a particular focus on ensuring passivity and stability during interactions with humans and/or the environment. This position aims to advance the development of control algorithms that maintain safety, stability, and robustness in robotic systems, while leveraging machine learning alongside differential geometry to enhance adaptability and performance. The research will emphasize the integration of Lyapunov stability, passivity-based control, variable impedance control, and imitation or exploration-based learning, particularly in scenarios involving human interaction and environmental complexities.

The successful applicant will engage in cutting-edge research with the following objectives:

Integration of Machine Learning and Differential Geometry: Develop and refine control algorithms that combine machine learning techniques with differential geometric methods to enhance the adaptability and efficiency of robotic systems in dynamic and unpredictable environments.

Passivity and Stability in Human-Environment Interaction: Focus on creating control strategies that ensure stability, which is crucial for safe and stable operations during human-robot interactions and in complex environmental settings.

Variable Impedance Control: Implement variable impedance control strategies to allow robots to dynamically adjust their stiffness and damping properties, improving interaction safety and efficiency in scenarios that require close human-robot collaboration or precise environmental manipulation.

Imitation and Exploration-Based Learning: Proficiency in applying imitation learning and/or exploration-based learning to optimize control policies, enabling robots to learn from human demonstrations and environmental interactions.

Qualifications:


	Applicants must have a PhD in Robotics, Control Theory, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a     closely related field, with a strong focus on robot control, machine learning, and differential geometry.
	Demonstrated experience in developing advanced control and learning algorithms, particularly in the context of human-robot interaction, in addition to an experience in working with real robotic manipulator.
	A strong publication record in high-impact journals and conferences (e.g., T-RO, IJRR, RA-L, RAS, IROS, ICRA, CDC, etc.), showcasing your expertise.
	Proficiency in programming languages and tools commonly used in robotics, such as C , MATLAB, Python, and ROS.
	Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary research environment.
