The University of California, Berkeley, a public research university, is regarded as one of the most prestigious state universities in the US. Part of the University of California System, it was founded in 1868.

Berkeley’s creation stemmed from a vision in the state constitution of a university that would “contribute even more than California’s gold to the glory and happiness of advancing generations”.

Berkeley’s colours of blue and gold were chosen in 1873 – blue representing not just the California sky and ocean but also the Yale graduates who helped to found the institution; gold the “Golden State” of California.

The university is located in San Francisco’s Bay Area, where it is home to about 27,000 undergraduate students and 10,000 postgraduate students.

Berkeley faculty have won 19 Nobel prizes, mostly in physics, chemistry and economics. Recent winners include Saul Perlmutter, who won the 2011 Nobel Prize for Physics for leading a team that discovered the accelerating expansion of the universe, suggesting the existence of a form of dark energy that comprises 75 per cent of the universe; and George Akerlof, who won the 2001 Prize for Economics for demonstrating how markets malfunction when buyers and sellers have access to different information.

Notable alumni include novelist and journalist Jack London, Oscar-winning actor Gregory Peck, former prime minister and president of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, author Joan Didion and Women’s World Cup-winning US footballer Alex Morgan.

Berkeley has a tradition as a centre of political activism. During the 1960s and 1970s, the campus was a hotbed for student protests against the Vietnam War.

Attractions on campus include a Botanic Garden established in 1890 and the 60,000-capacity California Memorial Stadium used by the university’s sports teams.

The Golden Bear is the symbol of Berkeley’s sports teams.

Berkeley’s sporting prowess was demonstrated at the 2012 Olympics in London, when its graduates won 17 medals – 11 gold, one silver and five bronze. If Berkeley had been a country, it would have ranked joint sixth in the gold medal table, alongside France and Germany.

We are dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and translating our research into real-world medical solutions, offering a dynamic and collaborative setting for cutting-edge research.  About The Role We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a multi-disciplinary research group led by Dr N.Safinia and Prof. A.Sanchez-Fueyo at King’s College London’s Roger Williams Institute of Liver Studies. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative research at the forefront of systems medicine, focusing on the progression of liver cancer and immune mediated liver damage. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team to unravel the metabolic drivers of HCC biology and transplant rejection through cutting-edge spatial multi-omics and computational metabolic modeling. The role involves developing and implementing computational methods to integrate single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and metallomics data. Using advanced techniques such as MALDI-MSI metabolic profiling and enzyme-constrained GEMs, the candidate will generate region-specific models to predict metabolic fluxes associated with liver disease. This research will provide key insights into the metabolic alterations driving T cell function within the liver microenvironment in various liver diseases, including transplant rejection and cancer, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The post is based at the James Black Centre, Denmark Hill campus, and the candidate will report directly to Dr. N.Safinia and Prof. A.Sanchez-Fueyo. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with clinicians, computational biologists, and experimentalists, ensuring that computational models are seamlessly integrated with experimental data. PET Centre Practice Development Radiographer/ Imaging Technologist

About Us The PET Centre is part of Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences. We run a clinical PET service in parallel with an extensive programme of clinical research. Facilities currently include two cyclotrons, radiochemistry labs, three PET-CT scanners and a PET-MR scanner. We have recently installed two state-of-the-art Siemens Quadra Total Body PET-CT scanners. This is a very exciting time to join our team with ample opportunity to contribute to an ambitious programme developing the clinical and research capabilities of the department. Our work includes providing a clinical PET service for >8,000 patients per year from across South East London as well as national referrals from other UK centres. We also support clinical and technical research programs with collaborators from the Hospital, the Medical School and other institutions. Clinical and research imaging capabilities are greatly enhanced by our on-site cyclotrons and radiochemistry laboratories, with tracers produced to GMP standards. We are one of two initial sites selected by the Medical Research Council (MRC) for the UK Total Body PET infrastructure. About The Role We are seeking a highly experienced PET radiographer/imaging technologist for maternity leave cover, to support our imaging teams in developing new ways of working to fully exploit the opportunities that Total Body PET will bring. With support and in collaboration with the PET Centre Superintendent Radiographers, the post holder will be responsible for identifying, developing and co-ordinating training and development initiatives for the Imaging teams. With input from the Medical Physics Leads, they will ensure staff are supported in adopting new practices to optimise clinical imaging protocols for Total Body PET, whilst maintaining skills in conventional PET-CT. They will ensure staff are trained to the highest possible standards to deliver a growing portfolio of PET research studies in adherence with Good Clinical Practice. In doing so, they will be expected to lead by example, able to deliver excellent quality imaging and patient/participant care themselves. They will provide leadership and motivation to establish research and clinical practices which are evidence-based and lead to standard setting. With the Superintendent team, they will monitor and review professional standards of care, reporting on performance, and instituting remedial action where necessary. To be successful in this post, we require a dynamic and ambitious qualified Radiographer/Technologist with good interpersonal skills and at least 3 years’ experience of working in PET imaging or nuclear medicine. Candidates who have experience in a practice development role and/or in delivering research studies and/or working with Total Body PET will be preferred. An important criterion for selecting the successful post holder will be their commitment to drive and implement change when recommended. They will support teams to deliver excellent clinical care to all patients and research subjects, working within all relevant local and National regulatory and clinical governance guidelines.  The post holder will assist the Radiation Protection Supervisor, Superintendent Radiographers and clinical and academic leads in all aspects of service provision, including working with new staff, trainees, students and visitors. They will need to be able to work independently, make decisions, and organise and prioritise their workload in a busy work environment and time critical situations. About us: The post will be based in the KCL Social, Genetic, and Developmental Psychiatry Centre, within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN). The Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP) Centre is uncovering the genetic and environmental influences on mental health and psychiatric disorders. Our research encompasses behavioural genetics, molecular genetics, experimental psychology and psychiatry, and neuroimaging. Scientists at the SGDP lead some of the UK’s foremost longitudinal cohort and twin studies including TEDS, eRISK, Dunedin, IMAGEN and GLAD. The NIHR BioResource Centre Maudsley leads the NIHR BioResource for Mental Health. We focus on recruiting participants experiencing mental health conditions, as well as healthy people. Alongside GLAD MHG and The GLAD study, Prof. Breen’s team boasts an accomplished portfolio of clinical and genetic studies which aim to improve treatment and outcomes for those affected by anxiety, depression, eating disorders and other mental health conditions. About the role: We are seeking a highly experienced, motivated and well organised operational leader and genomics workflow expert who will be responsible for maintaining and improving all aspects of our genomic and biobanking services, in addition to overseeing a large team of Research Assistants and Lab Technicians. The post holder will provide operational lab leadership across both King’s Genomics and the GLAD Mental Health Goals programme. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge genomics and biomarker research through large scale sample collection (Biobanking), GWAS, long read sequencing and assay development, while playing a central role in the operation and development of both facilities. The postholder will be responsible for all service offerings including sample processing, biobanking, high-throughput genotyping, ISO17025 lab accreditation, biomarker assays, and sequencing. The successful candidate will oversee day to day management and support the future development of the facilities, in a financially sustainable manner. The post holder will support multiple projects simultaneously, manage grade 5-7 staff, and deliver high-quality technical assistance and training to internal/external academic researchers and industrial/commercial clients, offering expert advice to meet their research objectives and service needs. This is a senior role in lab research and service provision management, requiring a high level of technical expertise and strategic leadership. The post holder will be responsible for managing the GLAD MHG Labs, King’s Genomics Core Facility. The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in genomics, including sample preparation, instrument operation for sample handling and automated data acquisition. In addition to technical expertise, working with the facility academic lead, they will play a key role in driving the strategic development of the facility, optimising workflows, and implementing best practices to enhance efficiency and increase research output. The facility manager will provide guidance to the BioResource and King’s Genomics lab team, whilst supporting researchers with experimental design, troubleshooting, and training. Strong organisational and leadership skills are essential to ensure the facility operates effectively and continues to evolve in line with advancements in genomics and align with the strategic goals of the faculty and King’s. This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 31st March 2028. About you: To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience: Essential criteria PhD or Msc in molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology, biochemistry, or a related field or equivalent experience.  Extensive of complex laboratory process including blood and DNA/RNA processing techniques Managing quality control and troubleshooting to maintain data integrity.  Highly experienced in high-throughput project logistics and familiarity with Hamilton and TeCAN automation pipelines. Experienced in team and line management. Evidence of writing and contributing to reports and documentation for regulatory approvals and pipeline performance. Desirable criteria Ability to deal and interact positively with a wide range of people to develop working relationships with team members and academic, clinical and administrative staff. Strategic management of laboratory facilities.
