The roots of the University of Antwerp (UA) date back to 1852 with the establishment of the State School for Economics and the Saint Ignatius School of Economics – two commercial institutes with a focus on business.
Both institutes were granted university status by the Belgian government in the 1960s and became Faculties for Economic Science. The Jesuit Saint Ignatius School gradually expanded to offer courses in arts, law and social sciences and by the 1970s, a third institute was founded to provide post-graduate and PhD programmes in Belgium’s second largest city.
All three institutions began operating as a confederation under the University of Antwerp banner and finally became the university it is today in 2003.
Today, UA is home to 20,000 students, of which about 18 per cent come from overseas with 132 countries represented through the student body. Working at the university are over 5,000 employees, including 3,000 tenured researchers and almost 700 professors.
The university is organised across nine faculties, including Economics, Engineering, Arts, Design Sciences, Law, Medicine, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
It offers 33 undergraduate degree programmes, 69 master’s and 18 ‘master-after-master programmes’. A total of 31 programmes are taught in English and the university prides itself on engendering an entrepreneurial approach.
There are nine campuses of the university that are spread throughout the diverse city of Antwerp, from the historic city centre to what is called the ‘green belt’ to the south.
Each year, the university publishes around 3,650 scientific publications. It cites research strengths in drug discovery and development, ecology and sustainable development, infectious diseases, neurosciences, socio-economic policy, and urban history and policy.

The post holder is required to be a highly experienced, strategic leader with expertise in artificial intelligence in the context of personalised health. EMBRACE is a visionary, multicomponent international research programme, the first of its kind in the world, supported by Inkfish with £35M core funds over six years, starting in April 2025. It is a global study of 60,000 participants, including 20,000 mothers, 20,000 infants and up to 20,000 partners. It brings together world-leading clinician scientists across six distinguished Healthcare organisations, world-leading AI & technology companies, together with premier biotech companies, with the overarching aim to fast-track major scientific breakthroughs, revolutionise maternal and early childhood health through precision-personalised interventions, powered by a groundbreaking symbiosis of cutting-edge AI combined with human support. The post holder is responsible for establishing and managing the EMBRACE programme working closely with the study Director and lead PI, Professor Josip Car (King’s College London), Senior Advisors, other members of the research leadership team and Industry partner organisations. The EMBRACE Chief Operating Officer will manage all parties within the global consortium and key stakeholders to set up and maintain an operational framework that meets the regulatory requirements of each partner country and organisation to meet EMBRACE’s ambitious goals. They will oversee day-to-day execution of decisions and contracts, including the oversight of the research teams and business operations. This includes the consortium’s financial management, project management – meeting key milestones, writing and presenting reports, establishing and overseeing the programme’s governance, ethical and regulatory compliance, and maintaining internal and external relationships including with industry partners, funders and collaborators. The EMBRACE Chief Operating Officer will provide strategic leadership, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and ensure delivery of high-impact research outcomes. We are looking to recruit a number of highly motivated postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, a lab technician and a research officer to join the international lab of Professor Khuloud Al-Jamal, a Chair of Drug Delivery and Nanomedicine. The aim of our lab is to use nanotechnology to better understand, diagnose and treat diseases with particular interests in cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. We are a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary lab eager to create an impact on people’s lives taking research a step beyond the lab. Research projects we are looking to pursue are in the areas of extracellular vesicles & cell therapy, immunotherapy, nucleic acids therapeutics for brain cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Duties and Responsibilities: Design and develop small molecules, nucleic acids and peptide therapeutics. Design, prepare and characterize nanoparticles. Employ state-of-the-art techniques to assess the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles, ensuring their stability, drug release kinetics, encapsulation efficiency and electron microscopy imaging. Integrate innovative approaches to enhance the specificity and efficiency of advanced therapeutics, with a particular emphasis on addressing challenges related to tissue penetration and targeted delivery. Conduct cell culture studies using cell lines, primary cultures and/or patients' tissues for efficacy evaluation. Conduct in vivo studies, including administration of nanoparticles, monitoring fate, therapeutic response, and assessing the impact on disease progression. Develop relevant disease models to assess therapeutic efficacy of a specific treatment. Demonstrate understanding of the disease pathology for better design of advanced therapeutics. The position is a renewable appointment based on curricular demand and performance. The Interactive Media program is a Bachelor of Arts major at NYUAD that combines art, interaction design, communications, computer science, engineering, and critique. While the program is formally housed in the University’s Arts and Humanities Division, it is a multidisciplinary major and has broad reach across the University. The mission of the program is to foster the creative use of emerging technologies for research, communication, and expression, while advancing a deep engagement with theoretical frameworks and critical discourse in Interactive Media. The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach that connects artistic practice with intellectual inquiry and social responsibility. Professors of Practice have professional, industry, or public sector experience and bring those qualifications to bear in their teaching. Appointees must be experienced or highly knowledgeable in their particular fields and, where relevant, have had experience in curriculum development. They are principally engaged in teaching and are also expected to remain active in professional, research or creative activities. We are looking for a faculty member who: Possesses an understanding of the aesthetic, cultural, social, political, critical, and ethical implications of interactive media and emerging technologies, and fosters an awareness of how these technologies shape and are shaped by societal contexts through historic and contemporary perspectives. Can engage students in developing a conceptual foundation for interactive media, integrating critical texts, reflective analysis, and creative practices that combine theoretical understanding with hands-on experimentation. In this role you will be involved in all aspects of apprenticeship quality and compliance support for the DA Social Work programme. This will include ensuring applicants meet the Department for Education funding rules and criteria for admissions and on boarding. You will be responsible for monitoring and recording apprentice engagement. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure Department for Education and Ofsted rules and regulations for apprenticeship provision are being met. You will need to maintain systems and processes to ensure the social work programme is compliant with these regulations You will be enthusiastic and driven to deliver an efficient and effective degree apprentice experience for apprentices and employers.
