About the University of Antwerp
Basic information and contact details for the University of Antwerp
The roots of the University of Antwerp (UA) date back to 1852 with the establishment of the State School for Economics and the Saint Ignatius School of Economics – two commercial institutes with a focus on business.
Both institutes were granted university status by the Belgian government in the 1960s and became Faculties for Economic Science. The Jesuit Saint Ignatius School gradually expanded to offer courses in arts, law and social sciences and by the 1970s, a third institute was founded to provide post-graduate and PhD programmes in Belgium’s second largest city.
All three institutions began operating as a confederation under the University of Antwerp banner and finally became the university it is today in 2003.
Today, UA is home to 20,000 students, of which about 18 per cent come from overseas with 132 countries represented through the student body. Working at the university are over 5,000 employees, including 3,000 tenured researchers and almost 700 professors.
The university is organised across nine faculties, including Economics, Engineering, Arts, Design Sciences, Law, Medicine, Pharmaceutical, Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
It offers 33 undergraduate degree programmes, 69 master’s and 18 ‘master-after-master programmes’. A total of 31 programmes are taught in English and the university prides itself on engendering an entrepreneurial approach.
There are nine campuses of the university that are spread throughout the diverse city of Antwerp, from the historic city centre to what is called the ‘green belt’ to the south.
Each year, the university publishes around 3,650 scientific publications. It cites research strengths in drug discovery and development, ecology and sustainable development, infectious diseases, neurosciences, socio-economic policy, and urban history and policy.

The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions. The main activities range from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces. You will also benefit from being a fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), being part of a thriving community with more than 100 quantum scientists on the premises, about 300 quantum researchers in Vienna. The Walther Group unites an international team of scientists who are passionate about research in quantum optics, quantum information and quantum technologies. Our 40 researchers, from undergraduate students and PhD candidates to PostDocs, are working together on mostly experimental topics in small subgroups. Teamwork is a key factor to our group’s success. This position is situated within the SIT x NVIDIA AI Centre (SNAIC). This role is part of an industry innovation project with a large consumer goods company, where you will develop an evaluation framework for vision-language model (VLM) with applications in the personal care sector. The research focuses on fine-grained VLM capabilities such as spatial reasoning, temporal grounding, event tracking, and domain knowledge using a curated multimodal dataset. On the quantum side, we explore the extreme regime of motional quantum states of solids and their interactions to understand how to maximize mass, delocalization, and coherence time in quantum experiments. On the gravity side, we explore the extreme regime of gravitational phenomena of miniature source masses to understand how to isolate gravity from all other interactions on a microscopic scale. Our main motivation is to explore the interface between quantum physics and gravity with new experimental platforms. Role and research opportunity We are now looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher in theory to join the Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD) group at Aalto University. This position is aimed at an outstanding researcher in circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) who wants to help shape the next generation of superconducting quantum technology. The role is a natural continuation of a successful line of quantum-circuit theorists in the group and is now open as we recruit a successor to a departing circuit-theory researcher. We are especially interested in candidates with strong experience in the theory of cQED circuits and a demonstrated ability to translate theory into experimentally useful design principles, models, or analysis. Expertise in open quantum systems is considered as a strong advantage. Your network and team QCD is one of Europe’s strongest academic environments in superconducting quantum circuits, combining theory, computation, device design, nanofabrication, cryogenic measurements, and entrepreneurship in one closely connected group. Our recent work spans high-coherence transmons, ultrasensitive thermal detectors for qubit readout, cryogenic microwave-photon measurements, tunable dissipation, and new concepts for autonomous quantum processors. You will work in close interaction with experimental researchers, cleanroom experts, and collaborators at VTT and beyond. Similar theory positions in the group have led to careers as professor, long-term quantum-hardware roles in industry, and new spinouts! The QCD group and its wider alumni network have also contributed to Finland’s quantum startup ecosystem, including IQM, QMill, Quanscient, and Arctic Instruments. Your responsibilities Develop theoretical models for superconducting quantum circuits, especially cQED devices relevant to control, readout, reset, filtering, tunable coupling, and low-temperature feedback. Analyse loss, noise, and decoherence mechanisms and connect theory with measured data. Contribute to new concepts at the interface of circuit theory, open quantum systems, and quantum control. Work closely with experimental researchers to guide device design, interpret results, and identify the most promising next steps. Publish high-impact research, help supervise students, and contribute to the scientific direction of the group. What we are looking for PhD in theoretical and computational quantum physics, quantum engineering, or a closely related field. Strong track record in cQED, superconducting circuits, quantum optics, or a nearby area. Excellent command of quantum-circuit theory, effective models, analytical and/or numerical methods, and scientific programming.
