Mechanical Engineering is a key priority area within this vision and is experiencing significant growth across teaching, research and industry engagement. We are seeking a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering who will play a pivotal role in this next phase of growth. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape a modern mechanical engineering teaching program while building a strong and sustainable research profile. This person will join the team working on a Research Ireland Discover award in conjunction with the European Space Education Resource Office Ireland – an outreach project with national scope entitled “5*S: Space, Surveyors and Students: STEM and the Sustainable Development Goals”. This person will continue and expand the successful outreach already achieved with focus on Transition Year, Initial Teacher Education and Industry Geomentors, introducing them to Copernicus, Augmented Reality, spatial data and the UN SDGs. It will also explore setting up new links with postgraduate teaching programmes nationally.  5*S is a collaboration between Maynooth University (Departments of Geography and Education), TU Dublin, Esri Ireland, the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland, Tailte Eireann, the Office of the Chief Government Information Officer and SOLAS. The person appointed will have a proven GIS and remote sensing skillset and experience of working with Copernicus imagery appropriate to career stage. Candidates must demonstrate the capability for independent, problem focussed thinking and be enthusiastic about showcasing space data such as Copernicus in Schools. The successful candidate will be expected to visit project partners and schools all around the country and this role will also involve significant amounts of travel to schools in rural locations including overnight trips. Job Purpose At SIT's Professional Officers Division, we bring our rich industry experience and technical skills into our work, creating a better physical environment where learning and innovation take place. We work with teaching programmes and innovation projects to improve the skills of our students and to strengthen & energise our industry and the wider community. A Professional Officer has a combination of job responsibilities relating to the following: participate in and manage innovation projects, manage digital technology related resources, and mentor & facilitate student learning. The Centre for Digital Enablement (CoDE) drives the initiatives to elevate digital competencies for academic staff and students within SIT. It works with various stakeholders, both internal and external, in upskilling digital literacy across the organization through literacy programmes and digital innovation projects in relation to the Digital Learning Spaces (DLS). For this role, you will spearhead the various cybersecurity enablement programmes in SIT, manage the cybersecurity related resources and initiatives within CoDE, and lead cybersecurity projects within SIT and with industry partners to support teaching and learning objectives. You will also be responsible for developing and delivering digital literacy courses to undergraduate students and academic staff as part of the institutional drive to ensure our graduates are ready for a highly digitally-enabled workforce. Additionally, you’ll be required to mentor and facilitate student learning by participating in and managing student projects. Key Responsibilities Cybersecurity Enablement Programmes Develop and own the Cybersecurity Competency Roadmap, providing guidance for SIT undergraduate students and academic staff in developing their cybersecurity competencies. Lead and oversee a range of cybersecurity enablement programmes to facilitate the growth of information security skills among SIT undergraduate students and academic staff. Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in cybersecurity, ensuring the continued relevancy and currency of the enablement programmes and Cybersecurity Competency Roadmap. Cybersecurity Projects Drive the adoption of sound information security practices across all CoDE projects. Collaborate with industry partners, faculty, Professional Officers and other stakeholders to conduct applied research in cybersecurity related technologies. Teaching & Student Mentorship Develop and deliver digital skills literacy related courses or workshops to undergraduate students and staff. This includes development of learning contents and activities, providing consultations on digital skills/technology related queries, and assessment and grading of students’ work. Job Requirements A good degree in Computer Science or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications would be advantageous. 10+ years of working experience, including at least 5 in cybersecurity related fields. Proven experience in developing and deploying secure enterprise software solutions. Good programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, C++, JavaScript, etc. Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). Possess strong supervisory and project management skills. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure that the project can meet the milestones adhering to the stipulated timeline. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  The researcher will be part of the team of the NAMIC Project for 3DP Ship Hull Design. The Research Engineer will play a critical role in the development, validation, and optimization of 3D-printed Ship Hull and Connector System. This includes conducting finite element modeling, ship resistance and stability assessments, as well as overseeing AM process and reporting. The role also involves designing and validating connectors for the modular system to ensure mechanical integrity, printability and adaptability. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Resistance Analysis: Conduct simulations to analyze wave interactions, buoyancy, and stability of modular floating structures. Optimize designs for dynamic environmental conditions (e.g., waves, tides, currents). Finite Element and Structural Modeling: Develop and implement finite element models to evaluate structural integrity under load conditions. Perform stress, strain, and fatigue analysis for modular components and connectors. Stability Modeling: Analyze stability characteristics of 3DP ship hull under static and dynamic conditions. Collaborate with teams to develop safe and efficient hull design. Design and Development of Connectors: Design robust, durable connectors means for integrated multiple hull modular units Validate connector performance through simulations and physical testing. AM Process and Validation: Oversee the AM process and testing of 3DP ship hull and connector system. Data Collection and Analysis: Gather testing data during for design optimisation. Reporting and Documentation: Prepare detailed technical reports on findings, including recommendations for system enhancements. Present outcomes and progress updates to stakeholders and collaborators. Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including material scientists, engineers, and field technicians. Liaise with external partners and vendors for test site setup and equipment. Compliance and Safety: Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards for marine environment. Maintain high safety standards during field operations and laboratory testing. Research Documentation and Dissemination: Prepare technical reports, research papers, and presentations to disseminate findings to academic and industry stakeholders. Contribute to project proposals and progress updates for funding agencies. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Project Management Support: Ensure timely execution of project milestones Coordinate with external collaborators and manage data-sharing protocols. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment The Research staff is to liaise with all relevant internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other adhoc duties as assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master/PhD in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field. Proficiency in hydrodynamic modeling tools (e.g., ANSYS AQWA or equivalent) and finite element analysis software (e.g., Abaqus, ANSYS). Experience with stability. Experience in designing connectors or mechanical interfaces is a plus. Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and materials is advantageous. Strong analytical skills and familiarity with data collection instruments and techniques. Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
