The University of Akron is one of the largest universities in Ohio. It was established in 1872 by members of the Universalist Church. Its main benefactor was Akron businessman John R Buchtel; the university was originally named after him. In 1907, Akron became non-denominational and in 1967 it became a state university, taking on its current name.

More than 300 degrees are on offer encompassing undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and law courses. The university aims to provide interdisciplinary studies through learning experiences such as internships, research projects and study abroad.

The university’s academic divisions are the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Health Professions, the School of Law, the College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, the Dr Gary B and Pamela S Williams Honors College, the Graduate School, University College and the College of Applied Science and Technology.

The university is best known for its polymer research. Students can study this at the university’s College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. In 2010 Akron opened the National Polymer Innovation Center, which features 10 state of the art laboratories. Several major rubber companies have partnerships with the university.

Students have lots of options for recreation, with over 300 different organisations on campus. They include 20 fraternities and sororities and interest clubs ranging from 3D printing to ballroom dance.

Description The Center for Interacting Urban Networks, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Associate to support the project LANDMark on research on land economics, in any of the following areas: Measurement of land prices, with a focus on imputation techniques Land value determinants: public infrastructures (transport, health, and education services) Macroeconomic stability and instability in the presence of land as a fixed, non-produced asset Taxation of land wealth as an alternative to the consumption tax and the capital tax The political economy of land and its taxation Land, fixed resources, and political conflict The successful applicant will contribute to the research centered on any of these themes. The qualified candidate will have a Ph.D. in economics or another quantitative field with no more than five years from receipt of the degree, and an appetite for working on interdisciplinary teams. This position requires: Research experience in the mentioned areas of land (in a broad sense, including housing, macroeconomics, labor, urban, spatial economics, political economy, and conflict). Excellent communication skills in English. A team of 4 postdocs will constitute the project's core. Associations and collaborative research funding projects with researchers in Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, and Political Science are encouraged. The post-doctoral associate will be hosted in the Social Science Division, near the economics faculty, and can be affiliated with CITIES (infra). As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Engineer (Microgrid Controller Design) will contribute to a one-year applied research project funded by the Singapore Army, focusing on the development of a mobile DC microgrid for military tactical applications. The role involves designing and implementing advanced control algorithms to coordinate multiple energy sources including battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, and diesel generators, and dynamically assign grid-forming roles under varying operating conditions. The engineer will develop, simulate, and test controller logic using MATLAB/Simulink or similar environments, analyse performance across diverse scenarios, and document results for technical reporting. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in control systems, software development, and power or energy management applications. Key Responsibilities Participate in the research project to design a mobile DC microgrid controller for military tactical applications. Develop control algorithms for dynamic master selection, coordinating BESS, PV, diesel generators, and other sources. Implement predictive, rule-based, or optimisation-based control strategies using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or embedded software tools. Integrate controller logic with the microgrid model and validate performance under different simulated conditions. Conduct testing of control strategies under various operating conditions such as extreme weather, load variation, equipment failure and deployment constraints. Prepare documentation, flowcharts, control logic diagrams, and controller specifications for the final report. Assist with procurement of software licences and technical equipment. Conduct Risk Assessments and ensure compliance with WSH regulations. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Work independently and collaboratively to maintain research software and project tools. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by supervisor. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Strong programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, or similar environments. Understanding of control systems, power electronics, or energy management strategies. Experience in microgrid controller design is advantageous. Familiarity with BESS control strategies, SOC management, or optimisation algorithms preferred. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Ability to implement and test algorithmic logic using simulation tools. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills. Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Research Technician in Cancer Immunology

Project summary An exciting opportunity is available to join the laboratories of Dr Ali Roghanian and Dr Salah Mansour at the University of Southampton in collaboration with MiNK Therapeutics. We are seeking a collaborative and motivated scientist to work on our newly funded programme developing next-generation, off-the-shelf immunotherapies for childhood cancers. This 12 month project will harness engineered cytotoxic invariant Natural Killer T (iNKT) cells for precision targeting of paediatric cancer neoantigens. Building on strong preliminary data, it combines mechanistic and translational immunology with bespoke preclinical models to define and exploit therapeutic candidates. The Research Technician will lead studies on cytotoxic T cell mechanisms, oversee preclinical validation, and advance TCR-engineered iNKT platforms optimised for immunotherapy. The role bridges basic and translational research and suits a creative scientist with interests in tumour immunology, T cell engineering, and immunotherapy. You will join a multidisciplinary team spanning immunology, with access to advanced flow cytometry and in vivo platforms. Key responsibilities To work within the Mansour and Roghanian labs, and with collaborators at Southampton, LifeArc and MiNK Therapeutics. To design, conduct, and analyse in vitro immunology experiments. To lead the optimisation and functional assessment of engineered human T cells. To liaise and coordinate between project collaborators, including the industrial partner, and core facilities. To record analyses accurately and present results at group and collaborative meetings, and conferences. To contribute to dissemination of findings through publications and grant applications. Any other duties appropriate to the scope and grade of the post. Essential qualifications, experience and competencies Degree (BSc or equivalent) in biological or biomedical sciences or equivalent experience Strong practical experience with core immunological assays (e.g., FACS, ELISA, T cell assays). Ability to manage projects to timelines, and work both independently and collaboratively. Excellent communication and presentation skills, including at conferences.
