Position Details  Three-year contract | Full time Academic Level C I AU$138,124- $158,885 pa | 17% Superannuation Location: Bedford Park / Kaurna Country View Position Description About the Position: Flinders University is seeking a Senior Research Fellow, Open Door to lead high-quality, collaborative research focused on improving the wellbeing of veterans, first responders and their families. This pivotal role sits at the heart of the Strategic Alliance between Open Door and Military and Emergency Services Health Australia (MESHA), strengthening national research capability and driving meaningful reform for service communities. The Senior Research Fellow will provide strategic research leadership across the Alliance, advancing innovative programs of work, securing competitive funding and translating evidence into tangible policy and practice outcomes. In this position, you will: Lead and deliver innovative research programs, including securing competitive external funding and major grants Develop and strengthen strategic partnerships with government, industry and community stakeholders Oversee complex research projects, mentor multidisciplinary teams and translate findings into policy and practice impact About You You are an established research leader with a strong track record in veteran, family wellbeing or social determinants of health research. You are collaborative, strategic and impact-focused, with demonstrated experience leading complex research programs and partnerships. You will bring: A PhD (or equivalent) in sociology, psychology, public health, policy studies or a related field, with a strong publication and competitive grant record Demonstrated experience leading large, complex research programs and securing external funding, including Category 1 grants Expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods, with excellent communication, collaboration and research leadership skills Lived experience as a veteran, family member, or close connection to the veteran community (desirable) Experience working with government and ex-service organisations (desirable) Familiarity with policy translation, knowledge exchange and impact measurement (desirable) About Open Door: Open Door is a nationally and internationally recognised research hub dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of veterans, public safety personnel and their families. Your working place: The Department of Astrophysics with currently around 90 members is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy at the University of Vienna. You will work at the interface of astronomical research and software engineering and will play a central role in shaping the software that enables the success of the ELT’s first-light instruments, MICADO and METIS. Our group develops and maintains custom-written software that will simulate, process, validate, and store data from some of the most advanced astronomical instruments ever to be built. Colleagues from many countries and backgrounds will rely on your expertise in robust, industry-standard software practices and your ability to bridge the worlds of astronomy, engineering, and IT. The position is nominally set for 24 months, preferably by 15 March 2026. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You implement software products based on existing design documents for ELT instruments. You define, install, and maintain the network infrastructure needed to connect software and hardware during instrument Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT). You collaborate with the astronomers and instrument-builders in the MICADO and METIS consortia teams to test, verify, update, and document software and operational use cases. You solve technical IT challenges during integration in the AIT construction hall and later at the telescope site. You work closely with local scientists to guarantee that the developed software meets or exceeds ESO’s scientific and performance requirements. You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. Your Profile Must-haves A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in software development for astronomy-related projects, preferably in data flow systems or data reduction pipelines. Experience with the ESO DFS software stack, such as EDPS, EsoRex, CPL, etc. A PhD / Doctoral Degree in astronomy, physics, or equivalent professional expertise. Solid knowledge of software engineering methods, network/system administration, and version control systems. Good-to-haves Hands-on experience with testing, verification, and documentation of the complex software systems involved with telescope instrumentation projects. Fluency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of German is an asset. Strong opinions on good software practices. Your working style is independent, structured, and solution-oriented. We are seeking a pro-active, self-motivated and highly organised team player to provide research project administrative support and assistance with research tasks to a friendly team at the University of Surrey. The successful applicant will support the project manager in ensuring the smooth running of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded project that is investigating the use of new and additional professional roles in primary care in the National Health Service. The person appointed will also support research team members, when required, with gathering, organising and analysing data. One of the key aims of the project is to improve understanding of how introducing new professional roles into primary care can improve patient care and outcomes. The successful applicant will be based in the Surrey Health Economics Centre at the University of Surrey and will liaise with researchers at the University of West of England who are co-investigators in the project. The position will also require working in partnership with NHS managers, administrators, clinicians, patients and other key stakeholders with an interest in the primary care workforce.  The successful applicant will be responsible for the efficient running of key administrative elements of this project, with strong supervision and support from an experienced wider research team, including the project manager and principal investigator. Providing some research assistant support to the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the project is also part of the role. The person appointed will be part of a vibrant community at the University of Surrey situated in the town of Guildford, which offers cultural sites, modern attractions and access to scenic countryside and London.  About you The successful applicant will require a flexible and proactive approach to work with excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently within a face-to-face and remote team culture. The person appointed will have a good working knowledge of MS Word, Excel spreadsheets and reference manager databases (desirable) as well as prior experience working with data including data entry, organisation of large data sets and assisting with statistical analysis. The person will demonstrate confidentiality, excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills and the ability to work on their own initiative. Organisation, planning and attention to detail are key requirements for this position. Previous experience in a research environment and an understanding of NHS structures and functions are essential.
