Universitas Negeri Padang was founded in 1954 as a teacher training college.
It awarded its first degrees in 1964, was opened up to disciplines other than education in 1997 and attained university status in 1999.
It is located in Padang.
Students can study in faculties of education, language and arts, maths and natural science, social science, engineering, sports science, economics and business, tourism and hospitality, psychology and health, medicine, veterinary science and the postgraduate school.
Most are based at its main campus at Air Tarwar in Padang, but other campuses accommodate nursing, elementary school education, special education and sports science.
More than 6,000 students took part in community programmes in 2024. These included an "English village" to teach language skills in a community reliant on tourism, and a World Bank-backed Android-based project to recycle waste into cash-making businesses.
A joint degree in Management is run in partnership with Universititi Utara Malaysia.
