Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta

Established in 1955, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta is a private university in South Tangerang, Indonesia. It is one of the oldest higher-education institutions within the Muhammadiyah Society, a major Islamic religious organisation in Indonesia. The university originated from the Faculty of Law and Philosophy in Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, in 1955, before relocating to Jakarta the following year. It has subsequently developed through several organisational changes, including its transformation into the Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru and later the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education.

The university has campuses in Jakarta and surrounding suburbs, including locations in Cirendeu, Ciputat and Cempaka Putih. Campus facilities include laboratories, libraries, student accommodation, a mosque and auditorium, food courts, a health clinic, business centre and training facilities. Students also have access to sporting facilities including football pitches, a badminton hall, futsal and basketball courts, volleyball facilities, and a gym.

UMJ currently has 10 faculties, alongside postgraduate studies, covering fields including social and political sciences, law, economics and business, engineering, agriculture, Islamic studies, education, medicine and health, and nursing. The university also offers doctoral programmes in areas including public administration, public health, management and Islamic education.

The Muhammadiyah student movement gives students an opportunity for involvement in student activities, shaped by Muhammadiyah beliefs and values. Students can participate in organisations including Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (IMM), the Muhammadiyah scouting movement Hizbul Wathan, and Tapak Suci Putera Muhammadiyah (martial arts).
