About Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang

Basic information and contact details for Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang

Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang is a public Islamic university in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. It was officially formed in March 1997 following its separation from IAIN Sunan Ampel and elevated to full university status in 2004. In July 2009, the institution was renamed in honour of the revered Wali Songo figure Malik Ibrahim, marking its current identity as UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang.

Located in Malang, 300 kilometres southeast of Jakarta, the university’s main campus spans 14 hectares in the Dinoyo district of the city.

The university is comprised of 8 faculties and a postgraduate school. Faculties include Tarbiyah and teaching, Sharia, humanities, psychology, economics, sciences and technology, medicine and health sciences, plus postgraduate studies offering 11 master programmes and six doctoral fields. In total, there are approximately 45 undergraduate majors and professional training streams. The university embraces both Islamic studies and modern sciences through its integrated learning model.

A distinctive feature of the university is its one‑year ma’had or campus‑boarding programme mandatory for all first‑year undergraduates. This instils Arabic, English, and Qur’anic competency alongside spiritual and moral formation, preparing students to graduate as ulul al‑bab or people of understanding.

With nearly 70,0000 students across three campuses and around 460 international students from more than forty-two countries, the university is increasingly global. It also hosts a newly inaugurated Centre for Pesantren Development aimed at strengthening Islamic educational ecosystems nationally.
