The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER for a fixed term period of 2 years, starting asap or as agreed. The Faculty of Social Sciences is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in the “Sex Differences in Immunity (SEXDIM)” project. The project aims to provide insight into how changing fertility patterns and environmental factors relate to immunity in populations, particularly in women’s health. The principal investigator (PI) of the project is Dr Elina Einiö.  This position is part of the interdisciplinary consortium at the University of Helsinki, Sex Differences in Immunity, led by Dr Piret Avila, which brings together researchers across demography, statistics, evolutionary biology, immunology, and genomics to bridge evolutionary and mechanistic explanations of sex differences in immunity. The successful applicant should contribute to one or more of the research disciplines of the project, preferably demography or health sciences. The project is associated with the Helsinki Institute for Demography and Population Health and the Max Planck – University of Helsinki Center on Social Inequalities in Population Health.  The main task of the appointed researcher is - jointly with the research team - to design and conduct quantitative research, mostly on longitudinal register-based data on autoimmune diseases. Additionally, the researcher is expected to actively contribute to teaching in the master’s program in social sciences, or thesis supervision and other research activities of the Institute. QUALIFICATIONS The appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in demography, sociology, health sciences, data sciences, statistics, economics, or other relevant field, have strong quantitative methods skills and an excellent command of written English. Demonstrated skills in either assessing lifetables, publishing in the field of public health, or using Nordic register-based data on medical care are a plus. The default assumption is that the degree requirement must be met by the beginning of employment. Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs. Job Requirements Education & Certifications: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields from a recognized University. Major in Information Security will be advantageous. Professional or industry certifications such as Cisco (CCNA), Juniper (JNCIA), Huawei (HCNA), Aruba (ACA), or equivalent will be an added advantage. Experience: A minimum of 10+ years of industry experience as a software engineer or network engineer with strong technical expertise and hands-on experience. Proficiency in software development principles, including Object-Oriented Design, Microservices, API integration, and full software development lifecycles. Strong programming skills in C/C++, Python, Java (preferred but not limited to). Hands-on experience in enterprise networking, including LAN/WAN design and operations with protocols and technologies such as VLAN, OSPF, ACL, VRF lite, VRRP, VPN, and link aggregation. Familiarity with software for networking devices/functions (routers, switches, firewalls) or network automation / SDN. Understanding of software repository management and/or change management processes for network/software version control. Demonstrated ability to mentor, supervise, or guide students in applied projects or research initiatives. Soft Skills & Mindset Self-starter with a problem-solving mindset and a passion for continuous learning. Ability to work closely with students and researchers to design, implement, and evaluate applied projects. Willingness to explore open-source solutions independently and contribute to collaborative projects with students, researchers, and industry partners.
