Japan’s Tottori University specialises in regional sciences, medicine, agriculture and engineering.

More than 20 research facilities belong to the university, including its teaching hospital, affiliated schools, and an arid land research facility.

The university has a philosophy of developing human potential for the sake of humankind. One of the ways it puts this into practice is through its training programme in Mexico, in which participants have to solve local agricultural and engineering problems in the field. The scheme has been running successfully for over 20 years.

Tottori University developed out of what were originally 19th century teacher training colleges. The area gained an agricultural college and two medical colleges in the first half of the 20th century. These institutions united, and in 1965 added the Faculty of Engineering.

The university’s Centre for International Affairs facilitates assists international students. The Centre handles queries and applications, and also gives students support on settling into life in Japan.

Tottori is the most sparsely populated part of Japan, making it a good choice for anyone wanting to get away from the bustle of cities like Tokyo. It is also home to eight national parks, which make up around 14 per cent of its land mass.

One of Japan’s most bizarre features, the Tottori sand dunes, are a short drive from the university.

The dunes, which are completely unique in Japan, look like something from the Sahara desert. The imported camels which roam them add to the surreal feeling that one has stepped through a portal into the Middle East.

Postdoctoral Researcher in the Computational Analysis of Culture

We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a fixed term contract between 9/26 – 5/29 or as agreed for the OTSO project. This position is based in the Human Sciences – Computing Interaction Research Group at the Department of Digital Humanities and relates to a long-standing interdisciplinary collaboration that studies the Finnic oral poetry system based on a large set of transcribed poems. The post-doctoral researcher will work in tight collaboration with people from computer science, linguistics and folkloristics to develop and apply capabilities for the large-scale modelling and analysis of the Finnic oral poetry system, based on a large set of transcribed poems. Depending on the background of the selected candidate, this may include, for example, the development of LLM and other machine-learning methods for the identification and extraction of higher-level signals (e.g. motifs, story schemas, naming formulas) from this multilingual corpus, the statistical modelling and large-scale analysis of said phenomena, or the development of mixed-method research pipelines. Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. For this position, the appointee must hold a doctoral degree in computer science, data science, digital humanities, statistics, or a related field, and have a keen interest in tackling complex problems in interdisciplinary collaboration. Previous experiences of such, as well as of working with large volumes of data (also in high-performance and GPU-accelerated computing environments) are considered advantages. Strong teamwork skills and an excellent command of written and spoken English are also required. A knowledge of Finnic languages is considered an advantage for the corpus work, but not a necessity. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to international academic activities, including high-quality peer-reviewed publications. The position is filled with a six-month trial period. What we offer The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual gross salary is €42,000 - €49,000. In Finnish universities, the teaching and research staff (app. 65% of total staff) have a special system regarding the free time equivalent to holiday. They belong to the 1,612 annual working hour system, in which the annual amount of paid holiday is app. 5-6 weeks on average per year. The Department of Geography at Durham University seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor in Human Geography who has expertise in the field of Health Geography that will complement and extend our current work in our Geographies of Life research cluster. This is a specialist teaching-focused post, primarily centred on leading and delivering our apprenticeship work-based curriculum across Levels 4, 5 and 6 for both Quantity Surveying (QS) and Construction Management (CM) pathways. You will be the Module Leader for our work-based modules, these modules run alongside apprentices’ academic modules and are explicitly designed to help apprentices apply learning in the workplace, evidence Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs), and progress confidently towards gateway and End Point Assessment (EPA) / Apprenticeship Assessment (AA) readiness. The modules will support apprentices across the following standards delivered within our provision: Level 4: Construction Quantity Surveying Technician; Construction Site Supervisor Level 6: Chartered Surveyor (Quantity Surveying pathway); Construction Quantity Surveyor; Construction Site Manager Alongside your module leadership responsibilities, you will also hold a defined tripartite caseload as an Academic Liaison Tutor, supporting apprentices and employers through on-programme progress reviews (apprentice–employer–university) to monitor progress, agree actions, and ensure workplace activity aligns with module and programme requirements.
