Responsibilities and Duties We are looking for future colleagues in all fields of computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, biocomputation, numeral networks, generative artificial intelligence, or mathematical modelling who can: Conduct high-quality research, evidenced by publications in world-leading journals, and attract industry and government research funding by offering significant research impact. Deliver high-quality teaching to undergraduate and graduate students, as evidenced, for example, by peers, students and external examiners. Work collaboratively across the campus and the wider university to ensure an inclusive, enriching and enabling entrepreneurial learning experience. Work collaboratively with the Dean of School in designing and implementing the School’s Research, Enterprise, and Industrial Development strategies. Work with relevant colleagues and departments to identify opportunities for successfully exploration research opportunities. Create and support a healthy industry-enhanced research environment, with agreed annual research outcomes and expectations, emphasizing impact and industry-funded quality research and innovation. Essential Qualifications/Experience Successful applicants to the position of Professor are expected to have: A PhD in artificial intelligence, data science, computer science, or other relevant disciplines from a world-renowned university. Ideally, hold a PgCert HE or equivalent. Outstanding research leadership and management experience and the ability to motivate and inspire teams with good people skills. A national/international reputation with demonstrable impact in any research and innovation fields relevant to the School. Evidence of successful research partnerships with academic institutions and external organisations. Evidence of good, sustained, and successful leadership of research grants and consultancy contracts and conducting high-quality research, evidenced by clear impact of output and publications in leading journals. Demonstrable experience in cooperating with industrial partners to develop R&D projects. A rich experience in teaching, research, academic leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship, strategic planning and financial management in a university and business environment. First-class networking skills and an ability to build and nurture external contacts and partnerships, working with businesses and other organisations in the area of innovation and business support to benefit the School. Lead the development, optimisation, and implementation of molecular synthetic biology technologies for programmable plant trait engineering. Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis until June 2028. Base salary range: Level A, $83,499 – $112,371 p.a. plus 17% superannuation. About the area The Plant Synbio Innovation Centre (PSIC) is based within the School of Molecular Sciences at UWA. As the WA node of Plant SynBio Australia under Bioplatforms Australia and the NCRIS program, PSIC will serve as a hub for cutting-edge research capabilities in plant synthetic biology, and agricultural biotechnology. The facility houses state-of-the-art molecular biology infrastructure and operates in collaboration with national PSBA nodes at ANU, La Trobe University, and Adelaide University. As the WA node, the PSIC is responsible for discovering, developing, and delivering plant synthetic biology componentry, technologies, datasets, and high throughput testing capabilities. PSIC’s activities span high-resolution plant cell atlas generation, regulatory network and genomic ‘parts’ discovery, development of high-throughput upstream screening pipelines to rapidly assess Synbio constructs and components, and implementation of molecular tools for both fundamental research and applied crop-engineering programs. This position will be based in the Bayliss Building on UWA’s Crawley campus, working closely with research, industry, and government partners to develop and deliver cutting-edge plant synbio technologies and services. About the opportunity Lead the development, testing, and application of advanced molecular synthetic biology tools for plant genome, gene activity, and cell engineering. Design, test, and validate programmable gene circuits, RNA/DNA editing systems, regulatory components, and transgene insertion technologies in transient and stable plant systems. Collaborate on research-service projects across academia and industry, ensuring reproducible workflows, scalable methods, and high-quality datasets for the PSBA network. About you PhD in plant molecular biology, synthetic biology, genome engineering, biotechnology, or a closely related field. Demonstrated expertise in molecular cloning, construct design, and genetic engineering techniques relevant to plants. Experience developing or applying programmable regulators, gene-editing tools (e.g., CRISPR, base/prime editors), synthetic gene circuits, or other molecular synbio technologies.
