About Suwa University of Science

Suwa University of Science is located in the large town of Chino in Nagano, Japan. Formerly a private university, Suwa University of Science became public in 2018.

In 1881, 21 young scientists envisioned "building a better future with science". This led to the establishment of the university’s predecessor, Tokyo Academy of Physics. Suwa College was then established in 1990 and became Suwa University of Science in 2002.

The area of Suwa is often referred to as "Eastern Switzerland" owing to its pure air and clean water. The district is surrounded by beautiful scenery including high land lakes, striking canyons and the volcanic mountains of Yatsugatake.

The university has become a hub of knowledge in the Suwa area. It helps to improve regional industry and culture by creating jobs for local people. It also teaches students how to adapt to the rapid development of science and technology.

The university seeks to educate students in engineering and business administration. It hopes that its graduates will contribute to the development of the region, the rest of Japan and eventually the world. This can be achieved through new industries that are created by scientific and technological advancements.

As a university of science, the only undergraduate faculty is engineering, and within it are two departments for students to specialise in. The faculty of applied information engineering includes the study of artificial intelligence, software design, and media expression technology. The faculty of mechanical and electrical engineering has courses in aerospace, environmental energy management, and innovative manufacturing.
