The role The post holder will lead the provision of a professional laboratory service, and a safe working environment within the school laboratories.  To do this, the post holder will:  be part of the School senior leadership team line manage the School technical support team, ensuring facilities are kept well maintained & well organised act as School Safety Advisor, ensuring School compliance with University policy and regulations pertaining to hazardous activities i.e. those involving hazards such as radiation, lasers, electricity, chemicals or cryogenics for example advise the Head of School on technical matters relating to projects, facility maintenance, equipment provision, and business continuity. The post holder will oversee other members of the school technical support team and will contribute to their appraisal process. They will have responsibility in advising regarding planning technical resource management and producing continuity plans with respect to testing facilities for the school. The post holder will act as the School Safety Advisor, ensuring school compliance with the University Health & Safety policy and regulations. The University of Surrey signed the Technician Commitment led by the Science Council, to ensure greater visibility, recognition, career development, and sustainability for technical staff across all disciplines. This position will provide opportunities to work alongside a diverse technical team, attend research seminars and build professional contacts across the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. There will be opportunities to undertake on-call work.  About you The successful candidate will hold a degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent, plus broad relevant technical and supervisory experience. They will have experience of leadership in a technical environment and of the operation and function of a teaching and/or research laboratory environment in the fields of physical sciences/engineering. They will also have understanding of, and experience in implementing, relevant Health & Safety legislation. We are looking for a motivated and collaborative researcher to join the STRENGTH Study team, a new NIHR-funded project working to improve support for family carers of older people experiencing anticipatory grief. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to meaningful, real-world research at the intersection of ageing and palliative care, in a team that genuinely values your professional development. This is a part-time (0.6 FTE), fixed-term post for 12 months. You will be supervised by the two project leads and benefit from structured mentorship and support with developing your own research profile. You will play a central role in the day-to-day delivery of the project, contributing across all stages of the research, including: Literature review Supporting database and grey literature searches and screening Assisting with data extraction, critical appraisal, and preliminary synthesis Survey and interviews Helping to finalise and pilot a national online and postal survey Coordinating survey distribution with voluntary and carer organisations across England Managing and cleaning survey data, and contributing to descriptive and exploratory analyses Supporting recruitment of unpaid carers for in-depth interviews Conducting interviews  Contributing to reflexive thematic analysis using NVivo Co-design and intervention development Supporting triangulation of review and empirical findings PPIE, dissemination, and team working Liaising with the patient and public involvement lead and carer advisory group Contributing to academic papers, conference abstracts, and accessible lay summaries About you We are looking for someone who is thoughtful, curious, and committed to high-quality research that makes a difference to people’s lives. We are seeking a highly qualified researcher to join a team with an international reputation for producing high-quality research outcomes in microbial genomics, antimicrobial resistance, and RNA-based diagnostics and vaccines. The scope of this project is broad and involves integrating genome-scale informatics, multi-omics datasets, and experimental microbiology to address critical challenges in human and animal infectious diseases. The successful candidate will contribute to advancing RNA-based diagnostic and vaccine platforms, genomic surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, and translational applications in collaboration with academic, government, and industry partners.
