Nazarbayev University (NU) is signalling a step change in its research ambitions. Our new President, Professor Waqar Ahmad, has committed NU to becoming a globally outstanding research-intensive university.  To do this, we are strengthening our academic leadership. Professor Rehan Sadiq has joined us as Provost, from his role as Provost and Vice President at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan Campus). Professor Bjorn Birgisson, a world-class research leader, is joining NU as Vice Provost Research and Innovation. Other outstanding leadership positions will be announced in the coming weeks. Considering that 80% of SSH relates to STEM areas, your disciplinary background will be in the physical sciences (chemistry, mathematics or physics) but you will understand social sciences and humanities sufficiently to provide leadership across the School. To command authority and respect in the role you will hold Full Professorship with proven leadership experience and a record of developing research groups and individual scholars, and attracting research funds. As VDRI, you will be instrumental in achieving our ambitious goals by driving research excellence across all the discipline areas of SSH, fostering innovation, and strengthening NU's global academic standing. The teaching responsibilities of the colleague will consist of two parts: 1) to lead and develop School-level AI modules and 2) contribute partially to department-level teaching. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate must possess a PhD in computer science or a relevant field within the humanities and social sciences as per the respective descriptions below. Humanities We seek candidates who understand the intersection of AI and the humanities and are capable of integrating AI technologies into their research and teaching, primarily through natural language processing (NLP) to analyse historical texts, literature, and cultural data. Experience with AI tools such as machine learning for sentiment analysis, data mining for social trends, or computational linguistics for linguistic analysis will be highly regarded. Additionally, the ability to instruct students on how AI can be applied to the study of philosophy, ethics, and history is essential. Understanding AI’s implications for privacy, identity, and digital culture is also critical. Social Sciences We seek candidates who can incorporate AI into their research on human behaviour, social trends, and policy analysis and are knowledgeable about AI tools that can analyse large datasets, including predictive modelling, sentiment analysis, or social network analysis. Experience with AI applications in sociology, political science, communication, linguistics, or area studies is vital. The candidate should be equipped to examine AI’s impact on social structures, inequality, and ethics in their work and understand AI’s potential to shape societal norms and public policy. Familiarity with tools such as Python for data analysis and AI-driven surveys or data collection methods is advantageous. About the role: We are looking to appoint a Programme Manager to join Dr Heathcote’s team within the Health Psychology Group, Department of Psychology at King’s College London. We are seeking a proactive and organized Programme / Lab Manager to oversee the administrative and operational aspects of a 5-year Wellcome Trust funded research programme entitled ‘When your body betrays you: interoceptive mechanisms of anxiety after cancer’. This is an interdisciplinary research programme cutting across psychology, neuroscience, and patient-clinician communication. This dynamic role involves managing budgets, contracts, and collaborations across leading institutions (KCL, UCL, and Stanford), supporting clinical trial-related activities of novel digital mind-body therapies, and facilitating research dissemination through publications and science communication. You will play a pivotal role in supporting the Principal Investigator and lab members, coordinating meetings, onboarding new staff, and fostering a positive and inclusive research culture. This role will require in-person attendance at Guy’s Hospital for at least two days per week on Mondays and Tuesdays. The additional 0.5 days can be worked either on Wednesdays or Thursdays and be worked flexibly, including at Guy’s or from home. The Health Psychology Section at King’s College London has played a pivotal role in advancing Health Psychology in the UK and continues to drive impactful research in long-term condition management and intervention development.
