Where will you be: Your position is based at the Department of Development Studies, a sub-unit of the Faculty of Social Sciences, which focuses its teaching and research on the transdisciplinary analysis and critical reflection of global inequalities. Teaching and research therefore centre on theories and approaches to social, political, historical, cultural and economic transformations and inequalities, and their reflection, as well as questions regarding the methodological approach to the subject of ‘development’. We regard transdisciplinary collaboration in both teaching and research as essential for understanding political, economic, social and cultural processes, dynamics, power structures and their interplay at both global and local levels. At the Department of Development Studies, you will join a team of dedicated researchers, work on exciting research projects, and benefit from collegial and transdisciplinary collaboration, as well as the opportunity to engage with a young and enthusiastic generation of students. The research focus of our unit lies in the areas of green extractivism, energy colonialism, hydrogen, post-development, and policies for ecosystemic survival in the Anthropocene. Our regional focus is on southern and western Africa, Latin America and the EU’s external borders. Our research strategies are shaped by post- and decolonial critique, political ecology and critical geography, critical governance research/governmentalities analysis, qualitative, discursive and participative methodologies. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: Independently develop and successfully carry out a postdoctoral project with the aim of securing a tenured position Contribute to the field of development studies from a political science / political-ecological perspective Independent development of / involvement in research projects and research grant applications Collaboration on publications, conferences and events Independently delivering lectures and conducting examinations in accordance with the terms of the appointment, including supervising undergraduates or co-supervising PhD students as part of a team supervision arrangement Assisting with organisational and administrative tasks as well as evaluation procedures Taking over responsibilities within the departmental administration This is part of your personality: A successfully completed, outstanding PhD and a Master’s or Diploma degree in Political Science, International Relations, International Development or a related field with a focus on political science or political ecology Proven expertise in at least two of the following fields: political ecology, political economy, postcolonial/decolonial theory, feminist theory/queer theory, critical security studies, peace and conflict studies, and transformation studies. Can we measure gravitational effects on entangled photons for shining light onto the interface of quantum physics and gravity? Can we exploit quantum photonics technology for novel quantum machine learning, quantum computing and quantum cybersecurity applications? Can we scale up multiphoton platforms by using integrated optics, quantum-dot single-photon sources and customized two-dimensional nonlinear materials? Your personal field of activity: The research group “Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation”, led by Univ.- Prof. Dr. Philip Walther, is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information group at the Faculty of Physics and a member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) – one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe – and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions. The main activities range from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces. For our further reinforcement we are looking for a Senior Scientist that supports, in particular, the research on theoretical and experimental quantum cryptography. The position is currently limited to 1 year with the possibility of subsequent unlimited employment. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You develop and strengthen an independent research profile. You are involved in research projects/research studies. You publish internationally and give presentations. You are responsible for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding. You will join the vibrant Flexible Nanoelectronics team, led by Prof Dimitra Georgiadou within SEMS group in the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. You will work in close collaboration with the Silicon Photonics group and Prof Frederic Gardes’ team at the Optoelectronics Research Centre. In the EPSRC-funded “Retinomorphic nanoscale synapses’ integration with silicon nitride photonic structures” (NANORETINA) project you will develop optoelectronic arrays, based on advanced photoactive materials, such as organic, perovskites and two-dimensional semiconductors, like transition metal dichalcogenides, acting as artificial neurons and/or synapses. These will be integrated on a silicon nitride photonic platform that routes and manipulates light. You will demonstrate adaptive, light-driven networks that combine sensing, memory, and computation. The role is well suited to candidates who wish to further develop their expertise in neuromorphic technologies and optoelectronics within a supportive and well-resourced research environment. You will work in the state-of-the-art clean rooms of the Optoelectronics Research Centre. You will receive extensive training and support from the current users for all facilities, as you develop the skills necessary for the job. Prior experience on every tool is not required. You will be invited to travel to project meetings and dissemination activities across the UK and overseas, and perform short stays at academic partners (e.g., University of Strathclyde, Aston University), assisting junior research staff and planning and participating in group outreach activities.
