A member of the State University of New York system, New Paltz is a 350 acre campus institution based in Ulster County, New York state. Founded as a classical school in 1828, it has been a modern degree granting institution since 1960.

Academics at New Paltz is divided between the college of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and the Schools of Business, Education, Science & Engineering, and Fine & Performing Arts. New Paltz offers summer research experience for science students, and previous projects have ranged from sexuality studies to the use of a bird feeder to encourage avian variety across campus.

There are no less than three open air universities on site, and the Fine & Performing Arts school contains 100 faculty members teaching roughy 1000 students. The Dorsky Museum has a permanent collection of 5,000 pieces of art, with a focus on local work and artefacts from the surrounding region.

The New Paltz study abroad programme is the recipient of the Heiskell Award For Innovation in International Education, and there are programmes available for over 35 cities from Cairo to Taipei. In 2015 New Paltz students went on an educational trip to Cuba for the first time following the American renewal of diplomatic relations with the nation.

Athletics teams are known as the Hawks, and compete in the NCAA Division III. There are six men’s programmes and nine women’s, including lacrosse, hockey, and tennis. Opened in 1964, the Elting Pool is a six lane facility that can host up to 300 spectators.

Among alumni of New Paltz is author Regina Calcaterra, owner of the New York Knicks James Dolan, congressman Maurice Hinchey, The Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, and actor John Turturro.

The Machine Learning for Health team at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), University of Helsinki, is currently seeking a highly-motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our team. Project overview Healthcare systems collect vast amounts of heterogeneous data routinely through interactions with individuals. Our mission is to use machine learning and data science to find better ways to utilize this data in healthcare planning, personalized medicine and targeted recall-studies. In this position, you will be a part of an expanding team working on difficult and meaningful challenges together with clinicians. You get to work with multimodal nationwide Finnish health data from 7 million individuals including for example medication purchases, laboratory measurements, clinical notes and imaging. Your main project will involve building and studying multimodal health trajectories on a nationwide scale to catch increasing disease risk as early as possible. In addition, this data, and similar datasets from our collaborators across the Nordics, Baltics and Europe present a fantastic opportunity to pursue your own ambitious research goals. Our other research directions of interest include privacy of AI models trained on health data as well as training AI models on health data across national borders. Key responsibilities Design, implement and benchmark machine learning models for large-scale health datasets consisting of diverse information including structured medical history, demographics, clinical notes, laboratory measurements, omics and genetics. Collaborate closely with other team members, and national/ international collaborators. Assist other team members in experiment planning, data processing and interpretation of results. Contribute to writing scientific articles, conference presentations, grant applications and supervision of Master’s students and PhD researchers. Take part in open science and code sharing. Skills, expertise and qualifications A PhD degree in computational biology, machine learning, computer science, data science, bioinformatics, or a related discipline Demonstrated machine learning experience in form of high-quality scientific publications, experience working with real-world health data is a plus Proficiency in Python and experience working in Linux-based HPC environments or cloud computing platforms Proven experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, and familiarity with multimodal data fusion is highly desirable Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in interdisciplinary and international research teams Willingness to supervise junior researchers and develop your supervision skills Excellent command of spoken and written English Research group The Machine Learning for Health team focuses on applying artificial intelligence to derive meaningful insights from large, real-world health and biomedical datasets. The team is led by Dr. Tuomo Hartonen. We have active collaborations with leading researchers in the EU, UK and US, with opportunities for international research visits during the employment. We collaborate closely with several research groups at FIMM and at ELLIS Institute Finland. We work with diverse international datasets ranging from Finnish and French national health registries to biobank studies such as FinnGen (Finland), UK Biobank (UK) and All of Us (United States). Contract and salary The position is initially offered for two years, and can be possibly extended. A trial period of six months will be applied. The starting salary will be ca. 3900-4100 euros/month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience, and is based on the University of Helsinki salary system. You will be required to work proactively across the team to understand the range and depth of work undertaken in the PHERcS team and wider Specialist Centre for Public Health and to prepare quality research outputs for dissemination.  You will have knowledge and experience of research within the public health sector, and to be able to work collaboratively to project delivery dates. You will also be an excellent communicator and able to build relationships both internally and externally. 0.6 FTE (21 hours per week) Part time fixed term for 12 months based at Camperdown Campus gain hands-on experience working on a cutting-edge space mission alongside leading engineers and researchers Base Salary $107,312 - $115,686 (pro-rata) + 17% superannuation About the opportunity The TOLIMAN Space Telescope is an ambitious international space mission led by the University of Sydney, designed to search for planets orbiting Alpha Centauri, our nearest neighbouring star system. The mission combines cutting-edge optics, precision mechatronics, advanced electronics, spacecraft engineering, and data science to achieve astrometric measurements at unprecedented levels of precision. To accomplish this, a unique optical system has been developed that uses a diffractive mask to imprint a highly stable optical ruler onto the telescope image, enabling the detection of minute stellar motions caused by orbiting planets. To make this measurement possible, several novel and highly precise engineering systems are being developed, including advanced fine-pointing mechanisms, thermal control systems, precision electronics, and specialised flight instrumentation. The mission is progressing rapidly toward spacecraft integration and testing ahead of its planned 2027-28 launch window, and an exciting opportunity exists to join the engineering team during this critical phase of development.
