Areas of research Thermal processing of minerals pyrometallurgy Job Description The Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute (GSMI) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) is seeking applications for an 18-month postdoctoral position in the field of mineral thermal processing and pyrometallurgy. The position is part of strategic, industry-linked research projects funded by the OCP Group.The postdoctoral researcher will focus on the development of innovative high-temperature processes for the transformation, upgrading, or enrichment of mineral resources, particularly those derived from complex or secondary ores. The work will include the study of the thermal and physicochemical properties of minerals, design and execution of thermal treatment experiments (e.g., calcination, roasting, smelting), and optimization of pyrometallurgical flow sheets for the production of value-added materials or metals.The selected candidate will contribute to both fundamental understanding and industrial applications of thermal processing, including product characterization, process design and modeling, and techno-economic evaluation of pyrometallurgical routes. Qualifications Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Metallurgy, Process Engineering, Materials Chemistry, or a related discipline, with a specialization in pyrometallurgy or mineral thermal processing. Strong background in material characterization techniques (e.g., XRD, TGA/DSC, SEM, etc.). Hands-on experience in laboratory-scale thermal treatment using muffle furnaces, tubular reactors, or pilot-scale kilns. Proven ability to conduct independent research, analyze data critically, and communicate results effectively. Excellent scientific writing and oral communication skills in English are required; proficiency in French is a plus. Preferred Qualifications Experience in pyrochimical processing of oxide, sulfide, or silicate ores. Familiarity with thermodynamic simulation software (e.g., FactSage, Thermo-Calc, etc). Previous involvement in industry-oriented or collaborative research projects. The position is intended for a confirmed professor (M/F), with at least 5 years research experience after a PhD in materials, electrochemistry, and Corrosion Science. He/she is keen on multidisciplinary work at the interface of basic research and the industrial world with confirmed experience in leading collaborative projects and supervising undergraduate students and PhDs. The Candidate must have a teaching experience of graduate courses in corrosion or related subject and have experience in the synthesis and characterisation of materials for Corrosion Science. Explore the relationship between material structure and degradation mechanisms. Investigate surface and interface phenomena in materials by developing advanced in-situ and operando characterisations techniques for corrosion monitoring and understanding of degradation mechanisms. Develop sustainable approaches for corrosion protection and long-term materials durability. Evaluate material performance across key sectors like energy, chemistry, automotive... to address corrosion and degradation challenges. Establish national, African and internationals networks to advance collaboration in materials and corrosion science. Translate knowledge into impact through high-quality publications, patents, and technology transfer. Coordinate and manage industrial collaborations focused on corrosion sciences, materials performance, and durability solutions. Abstract: This research assistant focuses on the design, prototyping, and testing of bio-inspired drones, inspired by the aerodynamics and adaptability of natural flyers such as birds and bats. The candidate will contribute to the mechanical design, composite fabrication, and experimental validation of UAV structures, integrating morphing wings and additive manufacturing processes for high-performance and energy-efficient drones. Objectives: The main objective is to support the development and validation of morphing drone prototypes by combining structural optimization, lightweight design, and experimental testing. The research assistant will: Participate in CAD/CAE modeling and structural optimization of UAV frames. Contribute to fabrication using composite and polymer additive manufacturing. Prepare and execute aerodynamic, vibration, and endurance testing campaigns. Assist in assembling and calibrating morphing-wing UAV prototypes. Methodology: Design and Simulation: ABAQUS, SolidWorks, ANSYS, or COMSOL for topology optimization and aerodynamic modeling. Fabrication: Composite layup, 3D printing (FDM/SLA), and assembly of drone airframes. Testing: Wind tunnel, fatigue, and flight tests for mechanical and aerodynamic validation.
