Established in 1870, St John’s University-New York is a private, Roman Catholic institution in New York City. It is a co-educational university which offers more than 100 programmes of study at undergraduate and postgraduate level, while accelerated courses are also available. It has had degree-awarding powers since 1906.
The university’s main presence is in Queens, home to a significant chunk of NYC’s arts scene and sport, hosting the US Open tennis tournament and baseball’s New York Mets. But it also has campuses in the neighbouring boroughs of Manhattan and Staten Island, in Oakdale, Long Island, 40 miles east, and European bases in Rome and Paris.
Built in 1995, its Rome campus in Prati, just over a mile from Vatican City, runs courses in international business, marketing management, finance, government & politics, international global development and social justice. Opened in 2008, its Paris Campus, located in the vibrant Sixth Arrondissement, is based in a newly-renovated building next to Vaneau metro station with 20,000 square feet comprising classrooms, study space and living space.
First-years at the university are expected to take a Discover New York programme to engage with the city and see it through a prism of arts, literature, politics and commerce.
Mario Cuomo, a two-term governor of the state of New York, and Chris Mullin, a five-time National Basketball Association all-star and two-time Olympic gold medallist most famous for his spells with the Golden State Warriors, are among its alumni. In 2015, Mullin returned to his alma mater to coach its men’s basketball team, Red Storm. Other alumni include Darryl McDaniels, a founding member of hip-hop group Run DMC, and rapper and songwriter J. Cole.

The School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in Palaeoceanography and Earth System Model Development. The successful applicant will work on the development and application of the cGENIE Earth system model on multiple sub-projects of the ERC grant ‘Determining the drivers of extinction across space and time’, under the supervision of institutional lead Dr. Richard Stockey and in collaboration with team members at the University of Oxford (led by Prof. Erin Saupe). The post holder will specifically work to generate a series of reconstructive models of 3D ocean biogeochemistry through 1) the last ~800,000 years and 2) the Phanerozoic (last ~540 million years). A key focus of this role is to conduct Earth system model development to improve representation of ocean biogeochemistry in space and time for the intervals focused on in this research project. This is a relatively short-term, specialist Earth system modelling position (15-month duration). The post holder is therefore expected to have prior experience in intermediate complexity Earth system modelling and experience integrating key components of Earth system evolution on these timescales, in particular linking model output to geochemical data and working with astronomical forcings. The successful candidate will either hold, or be nearing completion of, a relevant PhD/DPhil and will have appropriate research experience alongside strong subject-specific expertise. They should be capable of working independently within established research programmes, managing their own research activities and contributing to academic publications. Strong communication skills are essential, including the ability to clearly present research ideas and findings, as well as representing the research group effectively in meetings and collaborative discussions.
