About the Job We are seeking a Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Science to contribute to teaching, research, and programme development across our undergraduate and postgraduate provision. B1 lit. b (postdoc) Reference no.: 5246 We are looking for a Senior Scientist to develop, organize and operate the key laboratories of the Geoscientific X-ray Analyses (GeoX), an established laboratory facility within the Earth sciences departments of the Faculty, and a partner of the future strategic research hub and inter-university competence platform Cryst@VIE. The position is initially limited to three years. It may be converted into unlimited employment upon mutual agreement. Your personal sphere of play: The GeoX laboratories, which comprise a total of ten XRD instruments, are currently anchored with the Earth science department of Mineralogy and Crystallography at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy. The senior scientist will be supervised directly by the department's leadership. The highly-motivated senior scientist will have the opportunity as an expert for the XRD methodology to develop and manage the key laboratories and their specific instrumentation, which includes the development of a user base within the faculty but also beyond geoscience in close collaboration with partners from other departments, faculties and universities. This also includes partners from non-academic organisations, companies and industry, in particular within the new Cryst@VIE hub and its network. Your future tasks: Management of the geoscientific X-ray diffraction laboratory "GeoX" in particular the technical maintenance of the instruments, as well as ensuring and documenting the operation of the individual diffractometers, as well as administration of the user base. Performing measurements, evaluations, report preparation, and invoicing for contract analyses in the field of X-ray crystallography. Supporting and training independent instrument users. Teaching theory and practice in X-ray crystallography and its application to powder diffractometry, X-ray phase analysis, and X-ray structure determination, with an extent of teaching as required by the universities' collective bargaining agreement. Willingness to collaborate across departments, faculties, and universities with research groups from various areas of materials-oriented geosciences and chemistry, especially within the future competence platform Cryst@VIE. Responsible implementation of the relevant official radiation protection guidelines for the operation of the instruments and relevant laboratory facilities, as well as interaction and communication with the responsible authorities. Willingness to raise third-party funds, and to establish and maintain active industry contacts. This is part of your personality: Completed Master / diploma degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, or geosciences and a PhD / doctoral degree related to the application or method development of X-ray crystallography. At least five years of international postdoctoral experience or equivalent relevant industry experience. Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton. The School hosts a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community addressing global challenges at the interface of biodiversity, agriculture, and society. You will work on a Leverhulme Trust–funded project investigating the ecological and socio-economic importance of bat guano in Mexico. The project integrates bat ecology, cave ecosystems, microbiology, plant biology, and social science to understand how this under-recognised natural resource supports agriculture and rural livelihoods, and how it can be managed sustainably. The role The post is funded by the Leverhulme Trust as part of the project “Quantifying the socio-economic consequences of losing bat guano services”, awarded to Dr. Veronica Zamora-Gutierrez, Dr. William L. King, and Dr. Kelvin Peh, with lead-supervision by Dr. King. The position is fixed for 36 months (3 years). The postholder will lead research on assessing the impacts of bat guano on crop growth and physiology, soil health, and plant and soil microbiology. This will include performing fertilisation experiments, measuring plant traits, including above-ground and below-ground, and the collection and analysis of plant and soil microbiomes. The role involves extended fieldwork in Mexico and close collaboration with UK- and Mexico-based partners, conservation organisations, and government agencies. You will contribute to high-quality academic publications, policy-relevant outputs, and stakeholder engagement activities. About you You will hold a completed PhD in environmental microbiology, microbiome science, environmental science, or a related discipline. You will have demonstratable experience in field-based research, microbiology (field and laboratory), bioinformatics (e.g. metagenomics and high-performance computing), and handling plants and soil, particularly roots (i.e. rhizosphere collection and root traits). You will have a strong interest in environmental microbiology, plant-microbe interactions, and agriculture. You will be comfortable working independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and engaging with non-academic stakeholders. You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to contribute to peer-reviewed publications and project reports. Spanish language skills are not essential but would be helpful. You should be willing and able to undertake extended international fieldwork and work across cultural and disciplinary boundaries. You will be based at the University of Southampton’s Highfield Campus, in a dynamic and well-connected coastal city.
