Sharif University of Technology, founded in 1966, is one of the largest engineering schools in Iran. When it was established, the university had just 54 members of faculty, and 412 students. It now has more than 10,000 students.
Located in Tehran, the capital of Iran, SUT was previously known as the Aryamehr University of Industry but was renamed after former student Majid Sharif Vaghefi, who was killed in 1975.
The university, which has a reputation in Iran as being one of the country’s most prestigious higher education institutions, offers a range of graduate and postgraduate degrees in its 15 departments, and does not only offer engineering courses.
Among other non-engineering schools are its Department of Philosophy of Science, its School of Management and Economics, and its Department of Languages and Linguistics.
Each department has its own laboratories, library, and workshops, and students can choose to take humanities and social sciences courses to complement their technical studies.
Admission for undergraduates wishing to study at Sharif University of Technology is tough. Only those obtaining the top 5 per cent of scores in Iran’s national entrance examination, carried out by the country’s Ministry of Culture and Higher Education, can enroll.
SUT’s current chancellor is Mahmoud Fotouhi Firouzabad, a graduate of Sharif University of Technology who also studied at the University of Tehran and the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.
Among SUT’s famous alumni are Ali Larijani, speaker of the Iranian parliament; pianist, Peyman Yazdanian; international football’s all-time leading goalscorer Ali Daei; and Elshan Moradi, chess grandmaster.

Description Laboratory for Advanced Neuroengineering and Translational Medicine at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to recruit a postdoctoral research associate to join this new initiative focusing on designing and developing novel medical devices for ultimate human use. Laboratory for Advanced Neuroengineering and Translational Medicine oversees a variety of exciting projects developing new treatments and diagnostics for cardiovascular, neurologic, and metabolic diseases. The successful applicant will join a number of fascinating projects on engineering novel approaches to modulate physiology and neural activity in the brain, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and other peripheral organs. These projects have a high potential for translation towards treating a variety of neurologic and metabolic disorders. These approaches entail device design and manufacturing, drug conjugation, neuroscience, and preclinical model experiments. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Professor Raed Hashaikeh in the Mechanical Engineering Department, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and graduate students. The Associate Research Scientist will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities at NYUAD. This position supports two interconnected research streams: Investigating membrane fouling mechanisms and mitigation strategies in desalination and water treatment processes. Developing and optimizing functional membranes, including electrically conductive membranes, for use in desalination, energy generation, and electrochemical separations. Responsibilities: Conduct research on membrane fouling (biofouling, scaling, organic fouling), diagnostics, and control strategies. Design, fabricate, and characterize functional membranes (e.g., conductive, anti-fouling, electrochemical systems). Operate and evaluate membrane systems (RO, NF, UF) at lab and pilot scales. Apply advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, AFM, FTIR, XRD, TGA, BET, EDX, EIS, CV). Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers in materials science, chemical and environmental engineering. Contribute to mentorship of students and lab group discussions. Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. Strong background in membrane science with demonstrated expertise in either membrane fouling or electrochemical membrane technologies. Experience with membrane fabrication, testing, and characterization. Solid analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively. A strong publication record with first-author articles. Desired Qualifications: Expertise in fouling analysis and mitigation, including cleaning protocols and pretreatment strategies. Familiarity with conductive membranes, carbon-based materials, or mixed-matrix systems. Experience with electrochemical methods (e.g., EIS, CV) and surface functionalization. Knowledge of materials for charge transport and ion exchange. Prior collaboration with international or multidisciplinary research teams. This position will begin in March 2026, as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance. The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing.
