The Position

Applications are invited for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Physical Geography, to commence as soon as possible.

The Department seeks a dynamic and innovative scholar with a strong foundation in physical geography and demonstrated expertise in applying artificial intelligence (AI) to pressing environmental challenges. The successful candidate will bridge physical geography with cutting-edge computational and AI-driven methodologies, contributing to the Department's strategic vision of integrating geospatial data sciences with environmental and sustainability research.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:


	Conduct high-impact, internationally recognised interdisciplinary research in physical geography, addressing geographic questions in areas such as land-atmosphere interactions, environmental change, and Earth surface system science.
	Publish consistently in top-tier, peer-reviewed international journals.
	Develop and secure competitive external research funding.
	Teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, contribute to curriculum development, and design new courses relevant to the Department's programmes.
	Supervise postgraduate research students, including MPhil and PhD students.
	Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across the Department's three research themes and with external partners.
	Contribute to departmental service, administration, and knowledge exchange activities.


Requirements

Applicants must:


	Hold a PhD in Geography, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related discipline.
	Demonstrate strong expertise in physical geography, such as climate change, biogeography, hydrology, land surface processes, planetary health, or environmental systems.
	Have a strong record of high-impact publications in reputable international peer-reviewed journals.
	Demonstrate experience in, or clear potential for, securing competitive research grants.
	Have experience in, or show clear potential for, university-level teaching and postgraduate student supervision.


Candidates with 2-3 years of postdoctoral experience are preferred. Experience with AI-driven Earth observation data analysis, physically based modelling, ecological and carbon cycle research, public health research, or environmental monitoring systems will be considered an advantage.

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be made on a fixed-term, full-time contract for an initial period of three years, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of the second three-year fixed-term contract. A highly competitive salary, commensurate with qualifications and experience, will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and a University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. The Department of History at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) invites applications for a full-time, substantiation-track (equivalent to U.S. tenure-track) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the field of Public History, beginning August 2, 2027.

CUHK’s History Department is proud to have been the first department in the region to offer an MA in Comparative and Public History, and we have recently added a unique undergraduate stream in Public History. We seek a dynamic scholar-practitioner whose work engages with both public and scholarly audiences in innovative ways. The successful candidate will be expected to teach an introductory methodology course in Public History. In addition, their research and practice should evince a dedication to meaningful engagement with the community, governmental and non-governmental organizations, etc. (either in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China or elsewhere). A track record (appropriate to career stage) of scholarly publication is expected. 

We welcome applicants with specialisations in any area of Public History, including (but not limited to):

Experience in Digital Humanities (DH) and innovative public-facing methodologies is highly desirable. The position is open to all qualified candidates, both local and international. The normal teaching load is two courses per term, reduced to one in the first term of appointment. Teaching will be conducted in English, although knowledge of Chinese will be considered an advantage.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

i. hold a PhD in History or a closely related field by August 1, 2027;

ii. have an active research agenda with clear plans for future publications;

iii. demonstrate a commitment to teaching and mentoring students; and

Salary and fringe benefits for the post will be highly competitive. Applicants should (1) be a promising or established scholar with a doctoral degree (or close to completion) in the field of Business Intelligence and Analytics (including Information Systems, Business Analytics, or closely related fields); (2) have the ability to teach any undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses in Business Intelligence and Analytics, and (3) have ability to publish research papers in high-ranked journals in related fields. Applicants for Associate Professor positions should have a well-established track record of research excellence substantiated by publication in high-quality journals, and a strong commitment to mentoring junior researchers.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty by August 2027, or at any time subject to the mutual agreement of the both parties.

Remuneration

The remuneration will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
