Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher – Energy engineering and monitoring of solar panel performance in semi-arid environments Duration: 12 months, renewable Position Summary: We are seeking a docotor in energy to join our research team as a Postodoctoral researcher. The position focuses on studying the performance of photovoltaic solar panels installed on post-mining sites, in relation to microclimatic variations induced by local vegetation. The researcher will contribute to the analysis of vegetation–climate–technology interactions to optimize energy yield in environments subject to climatic stress. Responsibilities: Monitoring PV panels: temperature, efficiency, dust accumulation. Using environmental sensors and thermal cameras (UAV/IR). Comparative analysis of PV configurations: with vs. without vegetation. Studying dust deposition and its impact on energy performance. Analyzing meteorological, soil, and energy production data. Contributing to the modeling of PV performance under local conditions. Participating in the writing of scientific and technical deliverables. Compiling, analyzing, and documenting experimental research results. Working closely with project partners. Candidate Profile: PhD in solar energy, electrical engineering, or environmental sciences. Proficiency in PV systems, instrumentation, and performance measurement. Experience in processing environmental data (Python, R, MATLAB). Interest in integrated approaches (energy–environment–biodiversity). Skills in UAV data analysis, thermography, and field measurements. Teamwork and collaborative problem-solving abilities. The team comprises pre- and post-award services, contracting and consultancy support. Support includes tailored financial and contractual advice and management to all researchers at Durham, from planning, costing, and pricing the initial proposal to ensuring that contracts and agreements are negotiated effectively and efficiently, to ensuring robust financial management and compliance of awarded projects. Research Operations works alongside the various teams which make up the Research and Innovation Services and in partnership with Professional Support colleagues across the University to help facilitate research-related planning, reporting and development and to meet the needs of both the individual researcher and the wider institution. As a Pre Award Research Manager within the pre-award team, you will play a key role in supporting and developing externally funded research grant activity by providing high quality support and advice to academic staff in the preparation, submission and contractual negotiation of research grants and awards. You will join an enthusiastic and supportive team of Pre Award Research Managers based in the central office but will also be expected to spend time in the academic departments you support, to provide a key link role between the academic community and RIS. The Pre Award Research Manager will be a key point of contact for an academic wishing to apply for external research funding and will provide support and expert advice in a number of essential activities including: Project managing the submission process of the bid (including responsibility for budget development and seeking internal approvals). Working closely with the Research Development team on strategic funding opportunities. Lay reviewing applications for regulatory and funder compliance. Ensuring timely acceptance of successful awards including contract negotiation and ensuring all ethical and due diligence checks are completed. The specific research areas that post-doctoral researchers will explore include, not limited to: Pyrolysis, gasification, hydrothermal carbonation, hydrothermal liquefaction, Fisher-Tropsh, etc. CO2 capture methods (Chemical and calcium looping, absorption, adsorption, membrane, cryogenic, molten salt, etc.) CO2 utilization & conversion to high-value chemicals (e.g., electro/photo chemical CO2 reduction; catalytic chemical conversion; biological; etc.) CO2 mineralization of industrial waste ACER is actively engaged in cutting-edge research and development initiatives aimed at advancing innovation in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), decarbonization, and carbon-negative pathways. Position Requirements The primary roles of the chosen candidates are to contribute to the expansion of research programs concerning Carbon Negative, Capture, Utilization, and Sequestration by demonstrating at least some of the following competencies. Experimental development, testing, and demonstration of novel CCUS technologies Process simulation, cost, life cycle, and social assessment of CCUS value chains Reactor design, optimization, and sizing using phenomenological and/or CFD methods DFT and Molecular modelling linked to CCUS Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to interpret and analyze simulation and/or experimental results. Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams that involve experimentalists and modelers Criteria of the candidates: PhD in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or related disciplines, with focus on reactor and process design and development. Strong motivation and passion for research in the field of CCUS/decarbonization/Carbon management. Proven ability to perform multidisciplinary research and contribute to funded research programs. Proven ability to the planning, sourcing, and development of new initiatives and ongoing research activities. Proven ability to identify and fulfill the academic writing requirements for developing proposals, reports, and scientific publications. Demonstrated understanding of operational requirements for a successful research project and managing time and resources. Good English communication skills, both verbal and written, are important.
