Founded in 1785 as the London Medical College, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is the amalgamation of four historic medical institutions, including England’s first medical school.

It was officially granted university status in 1887 and now offers over 240 degree programmes across three faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Medicine and Dentistry.

Home to more than 20,000 students from 155 nationalities, the university’s five campuses are all situated in the heart of the capital. Its main campus at Mile End, in London’s fashionable East End, is the biggest self-contained university campus anywhere in the city.

With international students making up 40 per cent of the total student population, the university prides itself on having a vibrant, multicultural community with programmes in place, including help with English, to support overseas students. It also offers students assistance with job-hunting via the university’s own jobs website.

A member of the Russell Group of research-led universities, QMUL was ranked 9th among UK universities in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. It scores consistently highly in other global league tables and was in The Sunday Times’ top ten UK universities for highest graduate starting salaries.

QMUL alumni include the writers Sir Malcolm Bradbury, JG Ballard and Sarah Waters, as well as Bruce Dickinson, lead singer with the heavy metal band Iron Maiden.

Other QMUL notables include Elizabeth Blackwell, the first fully qualified female doctor in the UK who trained at its medical college in 1850; Sir John Vane, credited with discovering how aspirin works; and Dr Thomas Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist who founded the charity for poor and orphaned children.

QMUL also lays claim to associations with six Nobel Prize winners, the skeleton of Joseph Merrick (‘the Elephant Man’) housed in its Pathology Museum, and the second oldest surviving Jewish cemetery in England, dating from 1726, located in the centre of its campus.

Description The Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM) at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Research Assistant position to support ongoing research in the design, development, and characterization of innovative and multifunctional construction materials, including self-sensing and self-healing systems, with applications in infrastructure, oil and gas, and energy-efficient construction. The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of postdoctoral researchers, faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduate students on a range of projects, including: Investigation of self-healing cementitious materials, including chemical and bio-based approaches (e.g., bio-mineralization, encapsulated agents). Characterization of self-sensing materials, including their electrical and mechanical behavior under various stressors;Contribution to life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of novel materials to evaluate their environmental and economic impacts; Support in experimental design, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of findings through reports and publications. Qualifications: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a closely related field. Prior experience in materials synthesis, especially from industrial byproducts or brine sources, and in construction material characterization. Familiarity with life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools and methodologies. Exposure to smart materials, self-healing technologies, or sensor-integrated cementitious systems is a strong plus. Strong laboratory skills, data analysis capabilities, and a collaborative mindset. Preferred Skills: Experience with AC impedance spectroscopy, electrical resistivity measurements, or chemical durability testing. Basic programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python) for data handling and sensor signal analysis. Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and the ability to support multiple concurrent projects. The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for the position of TENURE TRACK ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN BIOPROCESS TECHNOLOGIES IN AGRICULTURE from 1.9.2026 onwards or as agreed. The position may be filled as a tenure track assistant professor or tenure track associate professor depending on the candidate’s merits and career stage. Information about our tenure track system: University of Helsinki tenure track. The goal of the tenure track is to advance to a permanent professor position. The appointee is expected to possess a broad and in-depth understanding of technologies based on bioprocesses in agriculture, together with demonstrated expertise in applying these technologies as part of a sustainable future food system. The appointee must have comprehensive knowledge in bioprocess methods, including fermentation, anaerobic digestion, enzymatic processing, and other biomass conversion technologies. Merit will be given to candidates who demonstrate a systemic approach and expertise in applying these technologies to the utilization of agricultural side and surplus biomass, as well as in the development of new cultivation, production, and post-harvest methods or renewable energy production, with due consideration of environmental impacts. The research conducted by the Associate/Assistant Professor is expected to advance integrative and multidisciplinary technological methods and solutions that enhance the profitability and sustainability of food production. Candidates must have verifiable experience in independent research in at least one of the following thematic areas: utilization of bioprocess technologies for the valorization of agricultural side streams and other biomass (for example, the production of novel industrially relevant biomaterials, bio-based inputs such as recycled fertilizers, biopesticides, food and feed ingredients, or renewable energy) development of new cultivation, production, and post-harvest technologies based on bioprocesses methodological development of smart bioprocess technologies and systems in agriculture Proficiency and research experience across multiple thematic areas will be considered an advantage. As this is a new position within the Faculty, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to establish a pioneering research and education pathway that is nationally and internationally distinctive at the University of Helsinki. The appointee will contribute to teaching in agricultural bioprocess technology and related topics within the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in Agricultural Sciences, as well as in the Master's Programme in Technologies for Sustainable Use of Renewable Resources (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/admissions-and-education/apply-bachelors-and-masters-programmes). The appointee will also supervise theses within these programmes and provide discipline-specific training in relevant doctoral programmes. The appointee participates in the development of teaching at the faculty and is also expected to work in the management teams of the degree programmes.
