The decree for its foundation was issued by King Ferdinand I, who also gave UPT its motto when he said in 1923 that "It is not the walls that make a school, but the spirits living inside". After several name changes, including more than 20 years bearing the name of aviation pioneer Traian Vuia, it took its current title in 1995 and since 2011 has been rated as an advanced research and technical university by the national Ministry of Education and Technology, the only university in Western Romania to be classified among the 12 in the whole country. There are also two three-star hotels. The university started off with the faculty of mechanical engineering and has since grown to 10 faculties representing different disciplines of engineering, including one satellite operation in Hunedoara. Of 3,300 students admitted in 2019, the largest intakes were in automotive and computer science (690) and mechanics (615). The 12 journals published by the university include the Nonconventional Technologies Review. Centenary plans include the modernisation of 100 laboratories and the creation of 10 new ones, the creation of 100 master's grants, 100 PhD scholarships, 10 new language study programmes and 100 agreements with companies and research institutions.
