Applications are now invited for the following post: Postdoctoral Fellow - Frontier of AI driven Inverse Design of Functional Materials Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies (Post Ref.: 25/176) Professor Xi Chen, Dean of the Wu Jieh Yee School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Chair Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, leads an interdisciplinary team working at the frontier of AI driven inverse design of functional materials. Current research directions include: Reversible material representation methods for accelerated inverse design Large language, diffusion & graph neural models for materials discovery Fine tuning and architecture optimisation of foundation models Inverse design of next generation functional materials (e.g. energy, sustainability) The group partners closely with leading institutes in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and worldwide, offering an exciting, collaborative research environment. The appointee will work as part of the team. This involves (1) conducting independent and collaborative research leading to publications in top tier journals and conferences; (2) contributing to grant proposal writing and collaborative projects; and (3) mentoring junior researchers and assisting with laboratory management. Requirements The candidate should have obtained / been conferred a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification in Materials Science, Mechanical / Applied Mechanics, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field for no more than three years prior to the commencement of the appointment. The candidates should have a strong track record in at least one of the group’s research areas, preferably demonstrated by publications in high-impact venues. Experience with machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, JAX) and / or computational materials methods is essential. Additionally, the candidate should possess an excellent command of written and spoken English and demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team. The teaching responsibilities of the colleague will consist of two parts: 1) to lead and develop School-level AI modules and 2) contribute partially to department-level teaching. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate must possess a PhD in computer science or a relevant field within the humanities and social sciences as per the respective descriptions below. Humanities We seek candidates who understand the intersection of AI and the humanities and are capable of integrating AI technologies into their research and teaching, primarily through natural language processing (NLP) to analyse historical texts, literature, and cultural data. Experience with AI tools such as machine learning for sentiment analysis, data mining for social trends, or computational linguistics for linguistic analysis will be highly regarded. Additionally, the ability to instruct students on how AI can be applied to the study of philosophy, ethics, and history is essential. Understanding AI’s implications for privacy, identity, and digital culture is also critical. Social Sciences We seek candidates who can incorporate AI into their research on human behaviour, social trends, and policy analysis and are knowledgeable about AI tools that can analyse large datasets, including predictive modelling, sentiment analysis, or social network analysis. Experience with AI applications in sociology, political science, communication, linguistics, or area studies is vital. The candidate should be equipped to examine AI’s impact on social structures, inequality, and ethics in their work and understand AI’s potential to shape societal norms and public policy. Familiarity with tools such as Python for data analysis and AI-driven surveys or data collection methods is advantageous. Description We are inviting applications for a Post-doctoral Associate in the Division of Social Science at NYU Abu Dhabi from individuals who have or will soon receive a PhD in Economics focusing on Macro, Labor and/or Development Economics. The appointment is for 2 years and will begin September 1, 2026, subject to final budget approval and UAE visa acquisition by the prospective post-doctoral candidate. The post-doctoral associate will spend half their time on independent research, and half their time on collaborative research with Professor Pauline Corblet and Professor Samreen Malik. The collaborative research will be on labor and education economics with a particular focus on structural models tied with labor market surveys to study the role of beliefs in the labor market in both developed and developing economies. We seek a candidate with expertise in both empirical and theoretical economics, with good coding skills. The role will involve designing surveys, working with existing datasets, and applying structural models relating to human capital development and labor markets. The position does not require teaching, but it may be possible to get teaching experience for compensation.
