Established as the Polytechnic University of Barcelona in 1971, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia is the one of the top technical universities in Spain. In 1984, it changed its name to its current title to reflect its broader presence within the region.

The biggest engineering institution in Catalonia, UPC has performed particularly outstandingly in architecture, engineering and technology rankings but also offers courses in computer science, physics and regional planning, among other subjects.

UPC spans several Catalan cities, including Castelldefels, Igualada, Manresa, Terrassa and Vilanova I la Geltrú, but the majority of its buildings are in Barcelona. Catalonia’s capital, and the second most populous city in Spain, Barcelona is one of the most visited cities in Europe, adorned with Gaudi-inspired architecture and full of cultural and culinary delights. It has endless parks, hills and its own beach, plus lots of history and nightlife.

UPC’s North and South Barcelona campuses are located in the city’s Les Corts district, slightly north east of the Nou Camp, the biggest football stadium in Europe and home to Barcelona FC. These include the School of Architecture, the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering, the Barcelona School of Informatics and the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

UPC’s oldest school is the Barcelona School of Nautical Studies, located near the city’s port.

The university’s official languages are Catalan and Spanish, with more than half of undergraduate courses taught in the former. But UPC also runs a number of courses in English and offers joint degrees with universities abroad, attracting especially high numbers of international students on postgraduate courses.

Programmes available in English include civil engineering, informatics engineering, health sciences and technology, applied sciences, industrial design and manufacturing and telecommunications engineering.

The College of Computing at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), Benguerir, Morocco, seeks a postdoctoral candidate in wireless sensor networks and the Internet of Things. The successful candidate will join the group of Prof. Youssef Iraqi.  Context Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) are among the leading enabling technologies for smart systems (transportation, farming, health, etc.). Therefore, WSNs/IoT have received enormous attention where various communications-related performance metrics were considered, such as reliability, connectivity, throughput, delay, network lifetime, power efficiency, and security. In the literature, WSN design is typically optimized to maximize/minimize one or more of the abovementioned metrics under certain constraints. However, very little work has been performed on system/network optimization while considering the communications requirements jointly with the decision fusion process. This approach will produce novel system, network, and signal designs. Consequently, the project's main objective is to jointly consider communication and data fusion requirements in designing an efficient WSN-IoT system/network. Responsibilities The successful candidate is expected to perform the following tasks: Conduct literature reviews and surveys on the subject. Contribute to developing novel communication designs to optimize the WSN-IoT system/network considering communication and data fusion requirements. Conduct a theoretical analysis of the developed designs. Develop simulations (writing code) to support the theoretical findings. Disseminate results through scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals. Write technical reports according to the project’s deliverables. Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and Ph.D. students. Assist in the preparation of new research proposals. Collaborate with the team members and international academic partners. Qualifications Ph.D. in communications engineering, computer science/engineering, or related fields. Sound publication record in high-impact conferences/journals. Experience in working as a member of a team in a collaborative environment. Strong mathematical and analytical skills. Strong technical background in optimization in wireless communications/networking. Experience with programming languages, especially MATLAB and Python. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. POSTDOC POSITION IN ADVANCED COATING OF LFP MATERIALS – IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO, CANADA We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to explore advanced coating techniques for Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) materials. This role focuses on developing cutting-edge solutions to enhance the performance of LFP batteries, with a particular emphasis on advanced material coating strategies. The project addresses the growing need to improve the surface properties and stability of LFP materials, especially under high-performance applications. Traditional methods for coating and stabilizing LFP cathodes often face limitations in durability and electrochemical efficiency. This research aims to overcome these challenges by applying innovative coating techniques using polymer- and nanomaterial-based coatings. These advanced coatings will enhance not only the chemical and thermal stability of the LFP materials but also improve their electrochemical performance, surface area, and selective permeability. The successful candidate will investigate methods to coating active materials, such as nanostructured coatings, to protect the LFP particles while optimizing their performance in high-energy-density applications. The coated LFP materials should exhibit superior mechanical and chemical resilience, ensuring that the coatings maintain their structural integrity during industrial-scale operations. Key research areas include: Developing novel polymer- or nanomaterial-based shells to coat the LFP particles Enhancing the surface properties of the coatings to selectively permit ion diffusion, increasing the electrochemical performance while reducing unwanted reactions. Ensuring that the coated LFP materials remain stable under high-voltage and cycling conditions typical in energy storage applications. Focusing on scaling these advanced materials for industrial applications, from traditional battery technologies to more innovative energy storage systems. This position will contribute to the next generation of LFP-based batteries, improving their safety, efficiency, and overall performance for sustainable energy storage solutions. Expertise in electrochemistry, polymer chemistry, and materials synthesis. Proficient in the materials (polymers and nanomaterials) characterization. Solid knowledge and experience in polymer coating and LFP or other battery electrode materials. Hands-on experience in battery fabrication and characterization. Familiarity with energy storage technologies is preferred. Associated Skills: Experience working on a project combining organic materials synthesis, purifications, and their characterization. Proven past experiences on the preparation and characterization of polymers and electrochemistry. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary and multicultural team. Proven ability of working with projects partners to reach their objectives timely. Excellent networking ability and organizational skills. Proven and distinct work experiences in academia and/or industries and/or abroad are highly requested. Program Details: UM6P will be the administrative body for the program, where candidates will apply to the UM6P Postdoctoral Program and will be formally employed as a Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) by UM6P.  Candidates will be paid through the UM6P administration for the entire length of the program. The salary is $2,000 USD/month (approximately $2,700 CAD per month), as guaranteed by UM6P for the entirety of the program. Waterloo co-supervisors may offer additional funding support to the candidates for their residency at Waterloo. The amount and duration of additional funding will be determined on a case-by-case basis. The program duration will normally be three years; during this time the residency will be split between the UM6P and Waterloo campuses. The candidate’s research activities will focus on the development of bifunctional catalysts for the conversion of biogas into high-value-added molecules. This position requires expertise in the synthesis of materials with controlled porosity and mixed oxides. The work will involve process optimization, and experience with fixed-bed catalytic reactors (gas/solid, continuous flow, high temperature) is highly desirable. Knowledge of gas-phase product analysis using micro-GC and FTIR is also required, along with general experience in materials synthesis. Main Responsibilities: The selected candidate will be expected to: Design, implement, and validate an experimental catalytic testing setup. Conduct conversion measurements at both laboratory and pilot/industrial scale. Synthesize and develop new catalytic materials. Characterize catalysts before and after reaction. Prepare technical reports and scientific publications. Candidate Profile: Hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in catalytic processes or an equivalent field. Have relevant experience in performing catalytic tests. Demonstrate expertise in gas-phase product analysis using chromatographic techniques and FTIR.
