The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (or the Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal) was established in 1979 and started teaching students in 1981.

It specialises in health and social protection, science, mathematics and computer science and social sciences, business and law. It currently comprises five higher schools: Setúbal Higher School of Technology (ESTSetúbal), School of Education (ESE), School of Business Sciences (ESCE), School of Technology of Barreiro (ESTBarreiro) and School of Health (ESS).

There is also an organisational unit, aimed at supporting students: the Social Action Services (SAS), responsible for housing, food, psychological support and sports and recreational activities.

The university has approximately 6,000 students and 650 teachers and offers more than 85 higher courses, including Professional Higher Teaching Diplomas (CTeSP), undergraduate, masters and postgraduate degrees.

It has two campuses: in the cities of Setubal and Barreiro, which are in the Greater Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

The university's aim is to stimulate professional knowledge, without neglecting the scientific and works as a safe space for the training of professional community-serving individuals. The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal has a strong connection with the community, educational institutions, hospitals and companies in the region. Its motto is “Juntos fazemos o amanhã,” meaning together we make tomorrow.

Setubal, as a region, is known for its paper and motorcar industries, as well as its varied landscape of ocean and mountains, including a large protected area which may soon become a UNESCO Human Heritage Site. Setúbal is a coastal town known for its fishing, Serra da Arrabida National Park, Baroque-style churches and Bocage traditions.

Your personal sphere of influence: The Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at the Faculty of Life Sciences seeks to appoint a pre-doctoral researcher with expertise in archaeology/archaeological science and to work with Associate Professor Katerina Douka (https://doukalab.univie.ac.at/) on a research project supported by the European Research Council. They will be part of a leading international team of researchers in the department working across the fields of Human Evolution, Ancient DNA and Archaeological Science. This is a non-renewable 3-year position. The RIFT-TO-RIM Project The ERC-funded RIFT-TO-RIM Consolidator project (2025-2030) aims to fill the gaps in understanding the pathways of modern human dispersals from Africa into Eurasia, and ultimately to Sahul, by ~60,000 years ago. One of the project's principal objectives is the discovery and analysis of new modern human fossils from under-researched parts of the world, such as sites in East and South Africa. State-of-the-art biomolecular techniques, including palaeoproteomics, chronometric and isotopic methods, and to a lesser extent aDNA, will be used to screen and analyse fragmentary bones and sediments from archaeological sites. The material will be collected from several archaeological locations in five countries (South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia, Kenya, Ethiopia) dating to between 200,000 and 10,000 years ago. Your future tasks: The candidate will work on developing and applying improved methodologies for palaeoproteomic analyses of bones, teeth and sediments from Middle and Later Stone Age sites in Africa. In addition, they will, where appropriate, apply other scientific methods including radiocarbon dating, stable isotope geochemistry and ancient genomics, to answer questions relating to the presence of modern humans at each site. The position would suit someone motivated to undertake cutting-edge research into aspects of modern human evolution, who has direct experience in prehistoric archaeology, as well as in areas of zooarchaeology and/or biomolecular archaeology. Experience in fieldwork or work in museum settings, is highly desirable. Training in palaeoproteomics (especially ZooMS), radiocarbon dating and pretreatment chemistry will be given, but prior experience in any would be an advantage. The candidate will have the opportunity to organize local research teams and small-scale laboratory work for the in-situ analyses of material. Description The Marine Microbiomics Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint a Research Technician with a background in chemistry or materials science to work on a collaborative project funded by Emirates Biotech, which is currently constructing the largest poly(lactic acid) (PLA) production facility in the world in Abu Dhabi. This unique partnership aims to assess the abiotic and biotic degradation of PLA under UAE environmental conditions, with direct relevance to sustainable plastics production and circular bioeconomy strategies in the region. The successful candidate will be responsible for characterizing PLA and other related materials under laboratory and field incubation experiments, applying a range of analytical and imaging techniques to study degradation pathways and kinetics. The technician will play a central role in Phase 1 of the project (abiotic lab simulations) and contribute to subsequent phases (field incubations and microbial enrichment studies). We are looking for applicants with: A Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Strong hands-on experience with a range of analytical instrumentation, such as Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and related techniques. Demonstrated ability to prepare, process, and analyze polymer samples. Familiarity with experimental design, data analysis, and maintaining laboratory instrumentation. Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Primary responsibilities will include: Conducting laboratory simulations of PLA degradation under controlled terrestrial and marine conditions. Characterizing morphological, chemical, and thermal properties of PLA samples using advanced instrumentation. Analyzing degradation products and preparing detailed datasets for kinetics and modeling efforts. Conducting field incubations to deploy and retrieve PLA samples in UAE environments.
