Who we are: We are looking to hire a postdoctoral research fellow to join the ERC-funded research project Beyond Thalidomide: The Patient as an Agent of Change, based at the University of Vienna. Beyond Thalidomide (2024-2029), funded by an ERC Starting Grant pioneers a history of the global rise of patient engagement with drug-related disability in the second half of the twentieth century to understand how newly empowered agents transformed conceptions of (reproductive) health and disease in science and society. It develops a framework to examine the origins, development, and consequences of patient engagement with antenatal drug use, iatrogenic disability, and reproductive health from the 1960s until today. The PI of the project is Prof. Birgit Nemec, chair of History of Medicine and the Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty Center for Transdisciplinary Historical and Cultural Studies. The Chair of History of Medicine and Biosciences at the Faculty Center for Transdisciplinary Historical-Cultural Studies aims to test and further develop approaches and methods in the field of modern history of knowledge and political epistemologies of medicine and the life sciences and to connect the department's institutes in research and teaching. The current thematic focus of the chair includes sex/gender diversity; medical products; risks and reproductive health; patient activism; dis/ability and global health as well as oral history methods and methods of research collaboration. The employment duration is 2 years. Your future tasks: Original archival research with a thematic focus on either: patient engagement with programs to prevent drug-related disability in health care systems in Western welfare states, in state socialist countries, or in postcolonial, newly independent countries to reconstruct patient impacts on the flow and negotiation of medical and public health models patients’ roles in the “entanglement” of Western drug development and postcolonial global pharmaceutical markets, including the histories patient campaigns contesting both pharmaceutical companies’ strategies for developing, testing, and marketing their drugs as well as uses of the respective products in postcolonial countries and beyond; with the aim to integrate industrial production into our understanding of patient impact on contestations on global markets legal action led by patients or patient campaigns as a practice and pivotal intervention into scientific and political debates to understand how the courts acted as sites of knowledge-making  To examine transformations in (reproductive) health by interrogating how patients act, organize, activate, and appropriate resources on “markets”, produce knowledge and expertise, and engage and communicate—distinct from authoritative scientific and political-regulatory counterparts To contribute to a more active and inclusive as opposed to proactive and paternalistic approach to global health policy making as well as in historical research ethics, recognizing the challenges of iatrogenic risks and disability and the potential of participatory approaches and ethics in research collaboration for democratic governance and civil society To contribute to project aims such as academic event organization, public dissemination of research results, publications This is part of your profile: Doctoral degree (PhD) in History or related fields experience in archival research in various geographic locations working language skills in two or more languages peer-reviewed publications (or submitted/accepted manuscripts) ability to work independently and collaboratively in research teams excellent English communication skills Advantages interest in interdisciplinary research with public health, medical anthropology and sociology What we offer: Team: An interdisciplinary, excellently networked and highly motivated working environment in research, teaching and public outreach/engagement Work-life balance: Our employees enjoy flexible, family-friendly working hours, remote/hybrid and/or part-time work (upon agreement). Your personal sphere of play: The Department of Sociology at the University of Vienna, a vital unit within the Faculty of Social Sciences, welcomes applications for a Post Doctoral position in an ERC Advanced Grant project centred on the role of emotion in public debate on loneliness, privacy, radicalisation and social isolation under the guidance of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Anna Durnova, Ph.D. This position is offered in the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant project LONERS "Loneliness, Emotions, and Regulation: Understanding Institutions through Privacy". As a Post Doctoral researcher, you will become a member of the Research Team of Anna Durnova, situated at the Department of Sociology.  The team's primary mission is to develop theoretical concepts and analytical tools to understand better current societal polarization, among which loneliness is seen as a crucial area. A special focus of the international team is given to interpretive social research and social research on emotions.  Additional methodological focus is welcome. The project: “Loneliness, Emotions, and Regulation: Understanding Institutions through Privacy” (LONERS) is funded by the European Research Council as an Advanced Grant. Within the LONERS project we aim to explore the relationship between loneliness, privacy, and emotions to help institutions better respond to citizens’ emotional needs. Going beyond conventional views of privacy, it will identify key moments of intervention that respect citizens’ privacy. By examining how loneliness interacts with societal values and norms, the project seeks to outline a framework for balancing privacy concerns with citizens well-being. Your future tasks: Active participation in research and project coordination assistance which means: You build up an independent research profile in the field of political sociology and emotion research. You will independently plan and execute empirical research within the scope of the ERC project outlined earlier. You are involved in  related research project and scientific studies in the area of radicalisation, social isolation and loneliness. You publish internationally and give lectures. You apply for theme-related projects and raise further third-party funds. You mentor students and junior members of the  LONERS project. You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance. You participate in a research project and in scientific studies in the field of political sociology developing your own research interests. You participate in national and international conferences and project meetings. You will write scientific publications. Your tasks will involve literature review, finetuning of analytical schemes to address the political force of emotions and supporting the coordinator in the elaboration of reports, as well as social impact activities. You will be part of the Faculty of Social Sciences, benefiting from an extensive network of excellent researchers. Active involvement in ongoing research conducted by the research team of Anna Durnova is encouraged. This is part of your personality: Strong interest in exploring sociology of emotions and political sociology  research topics theoretically and empirically. Strong interest in research on loneliness, politics of emotions in the context of radicalisation, social isolation and polarisation. PhD in sociology or related disciplines. Outstanding dissertation. Proficiency in social science qualitative research methods. A keen interest in acquiring advanced skills in discourse analysis and social network analysis. Experience with scientific writing and presenting. Further project-relevant writing skills are an asset. Excellent command of written and spoken English. While not mandatory, proficiency in an additional foreign language (notably Italian, Dutch) is a definite asset, due to the international character of the project. Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and within an interdisciplinary team. Research competence and initiative proven through international publications in peer-relevant media. Experience in research management. Team player and high social/communicative skills. What we offer: The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 3 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration. The Student Recruitment Event Team deliver all the virtual and in person events for prospective students to the University of Southampton. We are recruiting an administrator to coordinate student ambassadors to work in roles across our events. The role will advertise work opportunities, create ambassador rotas, deliver appropriate training and work with colleagues in the wider Event Team as well as academic staff and other professional services staff. The ability to work with Excel, Outlook and MS Teams as well as learn other systems such as virtual event platforms and CRM will enable you to succeed in the role. Good organising and timekeeping to administrate the multiple events through the cycle needs to be demonstrated, an understanding of Higher Education would be helpful but not essential and a willingness to support the delivery of in person and virtual events. We are looking for an individual who is committed to support the training and recruitment of ambassadors to enable them to represent the university and develop their skills in communication, presenting and customer service.
