The National Art School is seeking an experienced and visionary academic leader to head our Sculpture Department. This role leads one of Australia’s most respected studio‑based programs, shaping the next generation of contemporary painters while stewarding the School’s pedagogical excellence, artistic rigour, and vibrant studio culture. This position (full-time Head of Sculpture, Senior Lecturer Level D) is offered on a five-year secondment, with the possibility of renewal for subsequent terms, subject to a successful performance review, or reversion to the underlying permanent substantive position (Lecturer C). Salary range for Senior Lecturer Level D role: $139,265 to $152,670 plus leave loading, plus superannuation (total package range from $157,851 to $173,046) About the National Art School Our campus is located on Gadigal land in central Sydney, within the historic sandstone walls of what was once the Darlinghurst Gaol and is now one of the nation’s premier art institutions where many of Australia’s leading artists having studied and taught. The School is at the forefront of learning, creativity and innovative practice utilising its independent identity and distinctive studio-based teaching model to deliver exceptional higher education and research, scholarship and professional practice. Degree Courses Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) The BFA course is designed to support the development of the creative independence, knowledge and experience required for a successful career as a practicing artist or arts sector professional. The course is delivered full-time over three years and includes a comprehensive investigation of a broad range of art making disciplines supported by rigorous theoretical enquiry. Art History & Theory and Professional Studies are delivered as core subjects throughout all three years of the course in addition to specialised studio-based study in Ceramics, Painting, Photomedia, Printmaking, Sculpture and Drawing (from 2027). Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) The Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) is an intensive one-year course designed for graduates of the BFA who are ready to deepen their studio practice and expand their academic and professional capabilities. This course is ideal for emerging artists who want to refine their practice, build industry connections, and prepare for postgraduate study or professional opportunities in the creative sector. Master of Fine Art (MFA)* The MFA is a two-year full-time research degree designed for graduates who seek to develop a higher level of specialised knowledge and further their professional expertise and advanced research within their studio practice. Candidates develop an individual research project supported by supervisors relevant to their areas of interest. Doctor of Fine Art (DFA) The three-year DFA degree is a practice-based professional doctorate that provides a platform for integrating professional expertise and scholarly enquiry within the visual arts. This unique offering provides an important alternative to conventional PhD research for practising professionals who are committed to the highest standards of professional practice, academic research and critical enquiry through fine art practice. *NAS is currently phasing out our existing Masters by coursework degree with plans to implement a revised MFA (Research) degree from 2027. The Position The Head of Sculpture is responsible for developing and leading Sculpture curriculum in the BFA course and collaborating with the Head of Postgraduate Studies to support Sculpture in postgraduate courses, including the BFA(Hons), MFA and DFA degrees. The Full-time Head of Sculpture works with the other Heads of Departments and Heads of Programs to deliver academic and research support to students. What you bring to the role The Head of Sculpture provides academic leadership and management of the Sculpture courses, including line management of permanent staff, sessional staff, and technicians. The position manages resource allocation including studios, budget oversight, and management of related learning and teaching materials. In keeping with minimum standards for Academic Levels under the Australian Higher Education – Academic Staff – Award 2020, staff employed at this level can normally be expected to make original and innovative contributions to the advancement of scholarship, research and teaching in their discipline. Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT. Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs Job Requirements A good degree in Building Services, Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications like registered PE/CEng would be advantageous. Deep technical specialist with 10 or more years of working experience with mechanical systems in Building services environments or facility design consultancy would be preferred. Experience in following areas is highly desirable: Both design and management of mechanical building systems. Use of BIM software for design and engineering works and develop BIM models as well as knowledge in using CAD software such as REVIT, AutoDesk and ArchiCAD. Have working knowledge of building services systems such as Heat Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, lift, heat exchangers, micro-climate, simulations, fire-testing and acoustic experiments Have prior working experience in building and facility management Having experience with materials and materials property as well as materials testing, and fire testing is advantageous. Extensive experience and knowledge of industry practices to bring industry perspective to SIT as well as experience with Green Marking and energy management is advantageous. Keen interest in innovation projects, with demonstrated ability in developing solutions to technical problems. Strong supervisory skills and enjoy working closely with students in an educational environment. Demonstrate proficiency to keep abreast of development in the field and pursue professional certification programs. Possess industrial certifications in relevant areas will be an added advantage.

Your personal sphere of influence: Two predoctoral university assistant positions within the research team of Professor Folker Hanusch are currently vacant. The positions are situated within the Journalism Studies Center at the Department of Communication, a subunit of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna. The JSC has built a very good reputation in journalism studies over the past ten years, which is characterized by evidence-based work on a range of transformative developments in journalism at an international and national level. The Journalism Studies Center’s current research agenda focuses on 1) the comparative analysis of journalism cultures, 2) the influence of peripheral actors on journalism, 3) the audience expectations of news and trust in journalism, 4) diversity and activism in journalism, and 5) the role of subfields like lifestyle journalism, indigenous journalism, participative and constructive journalism. Interest in one or more of these areas, or in related topics, is an advantage for an application, but at a minimum a clear interest in journalism studies should exist. The team currently consists, in addition to the professorship, of one tenure-track professor, one senior lecturer position, one postdoctoral researcher, two prae-docs, one student assistant, and one administrative staff member. What characterizes us as a team is a highly collegial way of working, curiosity about new phenomena in journalism studies, and a commitment to internationally excellent research. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching and administration, which means: You are involved in research projects and scientific studies in the area of journalism studies. You publish in academic journals, and present the results at relevant (international) conferences. You work on your dissertation and its completion in the area of journalism studies under the supervision of Professor Folker Hanusch.
