The roots of Oxford Brookes University can be traced back to the founding of the Oxford School of Art in 1865, which occupied a single room in the Taylor Institution, an academic library. 

After serving as Oxford Polytechnic for several years, it gained university status in 1992 and took its name from John Henry Brookes, its founding Principal.

The university is spread across four campuses, with three primary sites based in and around Oxford, all with libraries, 24-hour computer rooms, libraries, playing fields, shops, accommodation, social spaces and study areas. A fourth campus is located in the town of Swindon, about 30 miles from Oxford, home to courses in adult nursing, operating department practice and continuing professional development courses.

It comprises four faculties, including Business, Health and Life Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Technology, Design and Environment (within which, its School of Architecture is recognised as being one of the largest in Britain).

With a large student body, most undergraduates study at the university on a full-time or sandwich basis. It has several thousand international students who between them represent more than 130 countries.

The university lays claim to around 100 partner agreements with higher education institutions worldwide, enabling students to take advantage of study abroad opportunities in Australia, the US, Europe, Asia and South America. It also offers work placements in Europe.

The university motto is ‘Excellence in diversity.’

Among its honorary graduates are the author Dame Hilary Mantel, campaigner Baroness Doreen Lawrence, artists Gilbert & George, and broadcast journalist Jon Snow.

The university’s Headington campus, which houses Headington Hill Hall, is set amid 14 acres of lush green countryside and was previously home to the media tycoon Robert Maxwell.

Description The Laboratory of Applied Nonlinear Dynamics (L.A.N.D.) within the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position, with a start date of November 2026. The successful candidate will have prior research experience, both computational and experimental, in the broad field of nonlinear mechanics. Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in machine learning, wave propagation, metamaterials, and/or fluid–structure interactions. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline, with no more than five years post receipt of the PhD. Strong English communication skills, the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, and demonstrated scientific creativity are essential. The selected candidate will be responsible for conducting computational and experimental research in one or more of the aforementioned areas, preparing manuscripts for publication in academic journals and conferences, assisting in the development of research proposals for funding agencies, presenting research findings to both academic and sponsor audiences, and supporting the day-to-day operations of the laboratory. Description The Smart Materials Lab (Panče Naumov Group) at the Division of Science and Mathematics, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit a highly motivated associate research scientist candidate in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for materials science, with an emphasis on structure-property-relationships, materials optimization, materials under extreme conditions, and generative AI. Candidates must possess substantial experience in artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, specifically in AI-driven materials discovery, machine learning applications for materials, or generative AI related to materials. The successful candidate will independently lead a project focused on developing generative AI models to establish structure-property relationships for materials discovery. This individual will be expected to collaborate closely with the project team and coordinate efforts with experimentalists from the Smart Materials Lab (SML) and the Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM) at NYUAD. The results of this work are anticipated to be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at prominent conferences. We offer unique opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaborations, organization of scientific workshops, and attendance at conferences. Key qualifications include a PhD with at least 3 years in a relevant field, expertise in AI/ML (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Python), interest in materials applications, and a strong publication record. The position is for two years, with the possibility of renewal, subject to mutual agreement. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. Job Details This Research Engineer will contribute to an international joint project related to policy-making in urban planning and design, focusing on developing a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework and tool. The work will involve integrating results from GeoTOPSIS and/or VectorMCDA in QGIS, enhancing spatial decision support for blue–green infrastructure and ecosystem service evaluation. The Research Engineer will lead the software development and interface programming, working closely with the GIS Research Fellow and interdisciplinary project team members to create a user-friendly, scalable decision-support tool for planners and policymakers. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project. Key Responsibilities Work closely with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely completion of all project deliverables. Implement and enhance GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA algorithms within QGIS using Python or equivalent programming frameworks. Develop a user-friendly interface (QGIS plugin or web-based application) for decision-making and data visualization. Collaborate with the GIS Research Fellow to integrate ecosystem service layers and model outputs. Conduct tool testing, validation, and iterative refinement based on stakeholder feedback. Manage documentation, data pipelines, and version control. Support system deployment on a secure project server and ensure cross-platform interoperability. Assist in project management and support the team in facilitating and organizing workshops, stakeholder sessions, and policy dialogues. Be involved in regular field work data collection and to perform environmental and biodiversity surveys (fish, birds and insects) as part of a research team. To communicate in any relevant internal or external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Geomatics, Environmental Informatics, or related fields. Strong programming skills in Python, R, or JavaScript for spatial analysis, interface development, or web applications. Experience in plugin or dashboard development (e.g., PyQGIS, Dash, Streamlit, or web-GIS frameworks). Familiarity with GIS concepts and geospatial data structures; experience with QGIS or ArcGIS will be an advantage. Ability to translate analytical models into intuitive, interactive user interfaces. Good teamwork, documentation, and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and able to learn new tools and frameworks independently. Additional Note: While prior experience with GeoTOPSIS/VectorMCDA is not mandatory, it will be considered a strong advantage. On-the-job training will be provided to equip the candidate with necessary methods and integration workflows with ecosystem service models and spatial datasets.
