We are seeking an outstanding Research Fellow to join an ambitious translational oncology programme focused on improving precision treatment approaches for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. This funded programme brings together laboratory scientists, clinicians, and molecular researchers to develop clinically relevant approaches for understanding therapeutic response and resistance in cancer. The post offers a rare opportunity to contribute to a highly translational initiative operating at the interface of discovery science and patient care. The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping experimental strategy, generating clinically relevant biological insights, and supporting the progression of the programme towards future clinical application. This is not a conventional postdoctoral role centred on a predefined set of experiments. It is an opportunity to contribute to the development of an evolving translational research platform with clear real-world relevance. The Role The Research Fellow will contribute to the scientific and translational development of the programme, including: developing and optimising advanced experimental cancer models leading functional studies examining therapeutic response and resistance integrating biological and molecular data to support translational interpretation contributing to clinically relevant reporting and communication of findings supporting regulatory, governance, and translational preparation activities helping shape experimental direction in collaboration with clinical and scientific investigators The role requires a high degree of scientific independence, critical thinking, and translational judgement. What we are looking for We are seeking an individual with strong experimental expertise and an interest in clinically relevant cancer research. Essential: PhD (or equivalent) in cancer biology or a related discipline Strong background in experimental oncology or cellular/molecular biology Experience developing or optimising complex biological assays or model systems Ability to interpret multifaceted biological data critically Excellent communication and organisational skills Evidence of scientific writing and publication Desirable: Experience working with translational or clinically aligned research programmes Familiarity with cancer therapeutics, resistance biology, or tumour modelling Experience integrating molecular and functional datasets Understanding of research governance, ethics, or regulatory frameworks Experience working within multidisciplinary environments The Environment The successful candidate will join a collaborative multidisciplinary research environment spanning: translational cancer biology clinical oncology and surgery molecular profiling and computational analysis The programme provides access to established infrastructure, high-quality clinical material, and strong translational support across Southampton and partner clinical centres. The McCarthy Lab has an exciting opportunity for a prospective Research Technician who is interested in synthetic biology approaches to engineer biofilms to better tackle environmental challenges. You will be joining a highly interdisciplinary project, where we will blend synthetic biology, environmental engineering, and biotechnology to develop disruptive solutions to major environmental challenges. Experience with advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. There will be a particular focus on developing approaches to harness bacterial community behaviours like biofilm formation to better tackle environmental pollutants such as waste plastics. Our aim is to leverage cutting-edge advancements in synthetic biology and biofilm engineering to develop innovative strategies for bioremediation, with a key focus on scalable solutions that can be readily adopted by the waste and water sectors. This fast-paced project will give the successful candidate the opportunity to develop new skills by working closely with our interdisciplinary team and build their international profile including through research visits to academic collaborators and working with SMEs. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate and efficient data generation, data management, collation and the reporting of results to the project lead. The post-holder will need to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, organisational, team working and communication skills and have a keen interest in drafting research outputs for peer-review publication. The successful applicant will work closely with other researchers within the McCarthy Lab and with other EBIC partners. There will also be opportunities to explore the commercial Applicants must have a BSc or MSc in a relevant discipline. Experience and knowledge in the field of biofilm formation is essential. Experience in some or all of the following: advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. They should be enthusiastic, well motivated and be able to work both independently and collaboratively. This position is available for 32 months. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (zoonotic viruses) The appointment is initially for two years, with possibility of extension, with the starting date as soon as possible after the recruitment decision is made. Please note that the work cannot start remotely. The position is filled with a 6-month probationary period. The appointment is in the upstarting research group on zoonotic viruses led by professor Johanna Lindahl, which means that the position will include work both at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (in Helsinki, Finland). The postdoctoral researcher will also visit international projects, mainly at the Taita Research Station in Kenya. The research group works on zoonotic viruses, including those transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, rodents and birds. The appointee will perform research in the project.
